What is Scouting The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America as incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by the congress in 1916. To provide for the boys and young adults an effective educational program designed to build desired qualities of moral strength and character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop physical, mental and emotional fitness. Purpose of Cub Scouting Cub scouting is for boys in the 1st through the 5th grade. Parents, leaders and organizations work together to achieve the following: Influencing the development of character and encouraging spiritual growth. Developing habits and attitudes of good citizenship. Encouraging good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body. Improving understanding in the family. Strengthening the ability to get along with other boys and to respect other people. Fostering a sense of personal achievement by developing new interest and skills. Showing how to be helpful and do one's best. Providing fun and exciting new things to do. Preparing them to become Boy Scouts. Volunteers in Cub Scouting Many people help your son's pack be successful. They are the Cubmaster, den leaders, assistant den leaders, the people on the committee and those who help out--- all are volunteers. The pack is a part of a geographical district with a large group of volunteers that support your son's leaders. They conduct training and program enrichment sessions; help with activities, events, and with fund raising. The National Capital Area Council (Council) itself is governed by its Executive Board, who is elected representatives of organizations that sponsor Scouting units--- all are volunteers. The Professional staff is small and works with a large number of volunteers to keep the organization strong, effective and efficient. By spending time with your son doing projects for awards and advancements you will have a part in his Scouting experience. We hope you will enrich his experience by assisting with his den and pack. The Cost of Cub Scouting Your Son's ($10.00) registration fee backs the National Organization of the Boy Scouts of America and its wide range of assistance to local councils through program development and the operation of the high adventure bases. A fee of $10.80 is collected for the Boy's Life Magazine subscription that provides the scout with useful information, jokes, new inventions, contest and many more interesting things. The organization that sponsors the pack will supply the meeting location. Lights, heat and help assist in the leadership. You and your son will supply his uniform and books. The support, training, program helps, counseling, ect. that the National Capital Area Council provides to your son's volunteers is paid for by thousands of contributors through the United Way, council activity fees, foundation grants and the annual Substaining membership.
