. GENERAL RULES: (Applies to all Race Events)

G-1. Qualification: All registered Pack 1776 Tiger, Cub, and Webelos Scouts may design, build and enter cars that are eligible to participate in the "Cub Scout Race" event. Parents or guardians of Cub Scouts registered in Pack 1776 may design, build and enter cars that are eligible to participate in the "Adult Race" event.  Siblings of Cubs (older and younger) may design, build, and enter cars that are eligible to participate in the “Sibling Race”, following the same rules as the “Adult Race”.

G-2. Essential Materials: All cars entered shall be constructed from the "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit" (referred to below as the kit) as distributed at the December Pack meeting.  Additional kits may be purchased from the pack (while supply lasts), or from a Scout Service Center (Monmouth Jct. or Florham Pk) or Effingers Sporting Goods.  Kits may be purchased elsewhere if they are of the exact type manufactured by the BSA as specified above)   Professionally designed or cars from pre-fabricated kits will NOT be permitted in the race. Scouts must design and build their own cars.

G-3. Competitor Categories: All Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts that are registered within Pack 1776, and Parents or guardians with registered sons, and siblings of registered scouts, may enter this Pinewood Derby. Cub Scouts will compete with others in the same rank.  Large age groups may be separated into multiple heats.  In the interest of fairness, some dens may be combined or individuals reassigned so that a roughly equal number of scouts participate in each of the four heats.  The first three place winners in each heat will move on to the finals.   NOTE:  Only registered scouts will race in the finals.  Sibling and parent heats will be held after the finals are complete.

G-4. Attendance: The Cub Scout MUST enter his own car. This means that the Cub Scout must be present at "Inspection and Registration" to enter his car into competition.  Inspection and Registration will take place at the Pack Meeting the night before the race.   Cars will be held by the committee overnight.   If a scout cannot attend the “Inspection and Registration” meeting, please contact a member of the Race Committee.

G-5. "New Work": Construction of ALL entries MUST have begun AFTER last year's Pack 1776 Pinewood Derby Races.   Scouts are NOT permitted to race last years model.  Siblings and adults are welcome to race older vehicles if they wish.

G-6. Single Entry per Person: Due to the constraints of time, any person in the Pinewood Derby may register only one car.   This includes adults and siblings.

G-7. Inspection and Registration: Each car must pass a technical inspection before it may compete. Technical inspection and registration of cars occurs at the January pack meeting and registration.

G-8. Late Registration and Inspection: If a Cub Scout fails to register his car at the pack meeting, he may submit his car on race day no later than 20 minutes prior to the start of the first heat.  Cars will not be registered after the scheduled start time of the first race heat.  No exceptions!

G-9. Failure to Pass Inspection: The Inspection Committee shall disqualify cars which do not meet the rules as described herein. If a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason his car did not pass. Cars which fail the initial inspection may be taken home for modifications and brought to race day according to the schedule stipulated in Late Registration and Inspection (Section G-8)

G-10 Wheels and Axles.  Wheels will be distributed at the January pack meeting and attached prior to weigh in and inspection.  These are the ONLY wheels and axles which may be used.  The pack will have spare wheels in the event some of the assigned wheels are defective.  Light sanding, polishing, and sanding of the axles and wheels is permitted at the pack meeting USING HAND TOOLS ONLY.  Assembly of cars is a den project, and any tools used should be shared with other members of your den in the spirit of good scouting.

G-10. Impound: No car may be altered in any way after it has been registered. After a car passes registration, it will be stored by the Pinewood Derby Race Committee until race day.

G-11. Car Design Rules Interpretation: Interpretation of the rules described in G1 through G-11, and T-1 thru T-9 are at the sole discretion of the Inspection Committee Judges present during the Registration and Inspection process.

G12. Race-Day Rules Interpretation: On Race-Day, the Cub Scout must make all questions of rules interpretations and procedures to the Pinewood Derby Chairman or Race Officials promptly. Decisions of Race Officials on questions of rules interpretations and procedure may be appealed to the Pinewood Derby Chairman. All decisions of the Pinewood Derby Chairman are final.  Note: Unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or spectator will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.
