| Are we about to go back to the dark ages before the phrase "under God" was put in place? It seems like it. With the liberalism that runs rampant in the courts of our nation, the outlook seems bleak. It seems that atheists claim that their kids are being "coerced" into professing a religious belief, it is detrimental to their health. Or so is the case with Michael Newdow, who says that his daughter is being hurt when, in her second-grade class, they have to say GASP! The Pledge of Allegience. Oh the horror! The 9th Circuit court of Appeals (remember them?) sayed that the phrase in question amounts to government endorsement of religion. I don't think this is what Thomas Jefferson meant when he proposed a separation of church and state. But why wasn't this "illegal" 50 years ago when the phrase was put in place? It just seems everything is "unconstitutional" these days. But the thing is, the kid says that she has no problem with saying it. It's only her "loving" dad. The group known as Americans United for Separation of Church and State, who are supporting Newdow, claims that a five or six year old kid would feel uncomfortable reciting the pledge in it's "current state" or even opting out. It would make them feel "unpatriotic." Right. Added on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 8:48 a.m. |
