| Dead Or Alive 2 by TECMO Graphics: Come on now, you may think it has lower quality graphics now... but cant you remember in 1999, you picked up your newest GamePRO or Game Informer magazine and all you could stare at was Kasumis um... figure...? -cough- And all you could think about was how great that would be in a fight with your best friend who also... had a... busty femme fatale with no bra.... -coughs some more- But in all seriousness, for the year 2000 this game was magnificent, and you know that if you didnt have a DC all you wanted was to buy one JUST for this game... which is probably why Sony got jealous and got TECMO to make them a copy, DOA2 HardCore. 9.0 Control: Well, you know theres a lot to be said about the control. More positive than negative but we gotta look at the whole picture here. The booklet that comes in the cover of every CD ever made, contains profiles of each character and a list of about 10 moves.... The plus side I want pointed out here is that there are still more moves for you to find on your own. Unfortunately, while you want your game to nimbly feel what youre doing, sometimes things can get... a little too sensitive. All this afternoon I was practicing in sparring mode and all I wanted to do was pull off a simple diagonal-right, diagonal-right, punch move... and it took about four different tries to make it work... it thought I was hitting right, or down, not diagonal-right.... Aggravating and a pain in combat. Also, some moves are not always so easily pulled off becuase the game doesnt always seem to notice every button you press. 8.0 Sound: Ah, the one bit of the game that is nearly flawless.... The music (with the possible exception of the theme for Zack) is beautifully done, and more or less fits each fighter perfectly. The voice-overs sadly, though well-crafted, were left in Japanese and so you must read the lines in subs. Annoying at times but you get used to it. 9.5 Worth: Overall, this is one of my favorite fighting games ever... unfortunately my game availability is a bit limited and I cant play many others anyway. But thats beside the point. For a two or three year old game this one just doesnt get worn out. Plus when you remove the CD from the case you get a special treat, heheh. One thing I feel needs mention though is the Story mode. There is really no story to follow. Each character has some drive to fight in the DOA tournament but the drives almost never relate to each other, are vaguely and poorly explained, and the final boss has nothing to do with anything. Hes just a very large Tengu... who looks like a bit of a wuss to me. But this game is without a doubt challenging and with all the various modes to save you from the agony of Story, it just wont get old for years... and if it does start to bore you, fear not for DOA3 is already out for Xbox... and if you dont have an Xbox then youre screwed I guess. |
