Movies

Who doesn't love Movies. For me going to the theatre is somewhat of an event, just a little too expensive to go every week now. I love all types of movies, and I'll give anything a chance.  I've recently been exposed to more dramas and lesser known, non-Hollywood pictures.  Actually, as I grow older I find more and more appealing to me;  But you'll never take Star Wars away from me, still the greatest.

Having said all that, just like any good movie watcher, I have opinions. I mean let's face it, when you spend you're hard earned money at the Cineplex, that gives us all the right to be a critic.  Just a warning, my opinions are mine, and if you disagree, that's absolutely fine by me.  Please feel free to email me, and let me know your thoughts.

I will review one of the movies I see each month, it may be my favorite, or it may be my biggest disappointment; whatever I feel strongly about.

To see my favorite movies over the past three decades, continue on down this page.

Cinderella Man

Ron Howard may be the most linear and boring director out there.  "Cinderella Man" is based on the true story of James J. Braddock, a boxer who barely survived the Great Depression with his wife and three children, only to become the Heavyweight Champion, which he later lost to Joe Louis.  A fascinating story to be sure....why is it that when Ron Howard and Russell Crowe attach themselves it becomes an utter snooze fest!

Let me start with the good things.  Paul Giamatti is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors.  All the way back to "Private Parts", I've thought this guy had something that rarely comes along in hollywood...he's one of the best character, supporting actors you could have.  And here, he's amazing again, over the top at times, but good none the less!  I will make this prediction now...he will be nominated for best supporting actor for this.  Also, the only thing Howard captured right was the atmosphere of the great depression.  Very dank and morbid looking.  However, that's all the positives I could see.

Now the bad....Russell Crowe is quickly entering Tom Hanks, Kevin Spacey, Denzel Washington territory for me (this is not a good thing!).  I'm sick of going to see this guy act like every role is his Oscar role...it just comes off forced and phony, as he probably is.  These big named actors are just too over wrought for their own good sometimes.  Hanks...well he had me, but lost me when that idiot Gump started running...just can't stomach him anymore, Spacey...what's his big role?  American Beauty?  Now go rent "The Ref" with him and Dennis Leary...IT'S THE SAME CHARACTER FOLKS!!!!  just a lot more funny!  And Denzel...well I've hated him since day one...boring actor that forces everything..he's the Black Hope for actors!!!  Bullshit....Sam Jackson, Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, Ving Rhames...now those are GOOD black actors...Denzel is all hype.  And Russell Crowe...do something quick, you're becoming to serious!

And how can I let Renee Zellweger get away with this abhorrent, trite performance of that hapless wife caring for her starving children, trying to hold together the family through all this horror...oh man I almost puked!

The most insulting part of this film is how Howard portrays Max Baer, the evil boxer who kills every opponent and gloats about it!  this is completely false, and the Baer family should take legal action towards Howard for slander!!!!  Let's get a man who towers over Russell and make him evil and unbeatable so Crowe's character is so much the underdog...which leads to a bigger American Hero....CRAP!!!!!!  Shame on you Ron Howard....stop butchering true stories to make them more dramatic just to satisfy your awful films!  for the truth on Max Baer, check this bio out.

This is just sheer garbage, and one can only imagine what it would have looked and sounded like done by a director who welcomes taking risks.  Remember Ron Howard is the guy who pretty much eliminated the whole gay subplot in "A Beautiful Mind", heaven forbid Opie Cunningham take a risk and maybe piss off some of the good Christian American public who is obviously his main audience.  Grow some balls Opie.....the whole American, apple pie, all ends well crap is so tired, and so are you!
