Another weekend, another pair of victories... you can't ask for much for than that folks. CUltimate is now 6-0 heading into the last half of the season! Just one year ago at this time, we were stuck in the middle of a 1-9 slump... what a difference a year makes! Great job out there every week... lets keep the winning streak going! For those who weren't able to make it this Saturday, we played two games at the obnoxiously compact Amidon fields instead of at the beloved Anacostia fields. But what with the waterlogged muddy ground and random dips in the fields, we felt right at home. In our first game against Sundays at Six, we started off slowly, falling behind 8-7 at the half. Our cup and then man defense were getting killed by the huck, and our offense was more or less stalled out. Add to that the fact that many of us were really tired and the ladies in particular had to play nearly every point and you can understand how things were starting off so slowly for us. Still, we fought back, shut down the Sundays offense with some impressive cup defense, and systematically moved the disc down the field to score. In the end, then, we defeated Sundays at Six 15-10 (and had our best cheer of the season... Sunday, Muddy Sunday) In the second game of the doubleheader, we went up against Seven Dirty Words. This time, it was we who jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on the strength of our defense and offensive mistakes on the part of our opponents. We ran into a little trouble in the second half, as Seven Dirty Words came back to tie us 8-8. But we held on, came through, and patientally moved our offense down the field to rack up a 15-10 win. I think its really a sign of the growth of this team that we were able to pull out both of these wins even against shifts in momentum that favored our opponents. Two seasons ago, we probably would have started collapsing once the tide shifted, but now we have what it takes to hang tough and come back to win. Great job! Special thanks go to Maine, Megan, and Michelle for playing nearly every point yesterday... without y'all, our wins wouldn't have been possible... great hustle out there! In terms of individual achievements: Anya: Just when we needed Anya, there she was. She played awesome as a handler, coming through with some beautiful passes and some of her patented falling grabs. And impressive work as a wingman as well. Megan: Tremendous effort out there today from Megan, playing strong even after 2 games... and she was playing part of that time in the cup, on less! Some real nice catches as well, including one or two for scores Michelle: Even sick, there are few players I've seen at Catholic as consistent and patient as Michelle when she's on the field. She makes beautiful cuts, shows amazing patience with her throws to allow things to develop, and catches everything that comes her way... Great job! Alan: As usual, Alan was indispensable on the field today. He kept the offense going with his handling and no-look throws, and was crucial in shutting down our opponent's offense by taking away the long throw. Jeff Crum: Another indispensable effort, Jeff kept the offense moving with his handler/popper cuts and some amazing catches and throws. Not to mention is work deep in the cup, knocking down everything that went in the air. Frosh Jeff (Lemonade): Since he started playing with us earlier this year, Jeff has continued to impress with his ability to pick up things and improve from week to week. He makes awesome cuts, plays wonderfully in the cup and as a deep, and even manages to get under his cover man's skin... great job! Rob: Another freshman whose shown great ability to learn and improve over the course of the season, Rob's energy level and sprinting ability is almost sickening. He runs everywhere, making beautiful grabs and helping keep the cup together by cutting off easy first throws. Sarge: Another strong effort from Sarge out there today, turning in a strong performance as a handler and making some nice deep cuts for catches and some scores. Nice job in the cup as well. Tim: Though still recovering from the previous night's activities, Tim came through all over the field, helping handle, run the cup, and move the disc downfield. Great effort! Dave: Dave came away with some nice popping cuts, helping keep the offense going. Also, nice work directing the cup and nice flicks down the field. Kemp: As usual, Kemp came through for the team deep on offense, coming through with some flying grabs, both for scores and for long gains. Also, nice effort in the cup, and great spirit out there! Woody: Woody was really essential to the offense today as a third handler, keeping the disc heading upfield with some nice crisp throws. On the defensive side of things, he also helped tighten up the cup and keep the other team from moving the disc down the field. Great job!
