Great playing out there yesterday, folks! Its always nice to start the season off with a win, especially one so lopsided in our favor. For those of us who weren't able to make it this weekend, we ended up playing Big Bad Mother Huckers to a 15-6 win, through drizzle and all. At the start of the game, we were having some confusion and were playing a little sloppy, letting the Mothers jump to a small early lead even though they were playing without subs. Still, we were able to get our cup defense in order, establish handlers against their zone, and work the disc down the field. It wasn't a flawless performanceby any stretch of the imagination, but by the time we got to the half, we were pretty firmly in control with the score 8-5. In the second half, the Mothers lost a player and had to play a man down, while we started to get better flow into our own game. As a result, after dropping the first point of the half, CUltimate went on a 7-0 run, finishing off the game with a 15-6 win. Defensively speaking, our cup got more effective as the day went on. We still need to work on it a little to get it back where it was at the end of last season, but the progress during this game alone was impressive. On offense, we need to shake off a little of the rust as well. Still, once we established who are handlers were and started making some nice crisp cuts, our play really started to pick up. And what was really cool was everyone on the field was more or less involved in most of the points on offense. Lets keep that up! In terms of individual performances: Megan- Nice work in the cup, helping shut down the Mother's offense and forcing them to throw long downfield. Excellent. Crowley- Leg injury and all, Tim came through with some really nice offensive cuts and some nice handling. Jeff Crum- Nice job both as a handler and popper, and amazing defense deep as always. Michelle- Way to play in the cup, and great job getting open for some really nice mid throws. Anya- The hero of the game, in that without her, we wouldn't even have shown up yesterday. Great job throwing, and some really nice falling grabs. Dave- Good work in the cup, nice popping cuts, and nice job blocking throws he wasn't even trying to block. Jeanie- Jeanie had some really nice mid catches, nice throws, and was great as always as team mom, bringing food and drinks above and beyond the call of duty. Alan- Nice work as a handler against the Mother's cup, and great effort as a deep deep on defense, knocking down all kinds of long throws. Erika- Erika showed a lot of spirit out there yesterday, even playing tired from the night before. Nice job in the defensive scheme. Kemp- As always, Kemp and his freakishly long arms were making all kinds of catches down the field. Great job (as much as it pains me to write that) Courtney- In her return performance to CUltimate, Courtney played wonderfully, making some really tough catches and helping the team spread the field with her nice long cuts. Rob- In his first WAFC game, Rob played really well, getting the hang of playing in the cup and showing real hustle out there. Great job. Freshman Jeff- Our other newbie out there yesterday, Jeff was impressive with his crisp cuts, nice catches, and good work in the cup. Nicely done. Of special note, Jeff ran his initiation yesterday at breakneck speed, knocking down all the discs thrown at him (except, might I note, the one that I winged at him :)
