Hey Folks-- Great playing out there today...its always nice to sweep a doubleheader. In the first game of the day, we played Choice Hops, a large team of 30-somethings who were extremely injury-prone. Our team started off slowly with some sloppy offensive plays, and as a result we were only up 8-7 at the half. However, we were able to come back and pull away in the second half thanks to some awesome cup defense and some nice methodical offensive drives down the field. Our defnese was fantastic, our throws crisp, and our catches amazing. In the end, we walked away with a well-deserved but costly 15-11 win. Well-deserved because we kept our cool and pulled out a tight win...costly cuz we lost one of our players for the season to an injury on a great defensive play. Ray, who was having a great defensive day with multiple knock-downs, dove to block a pass, and in accomplishing that landed on his collarbone in a bad way, knocking him out for the season. Three cheers for Ray, who showed some real love for the game today... we'll miss having you out on the field for the rest of the season, but you're still a valuable part of the team. Special thanks also goes to Jeanie, who took Ray to the hospital and sacrificed her chance to play in the second game. Three cheers for Ray and Jeanie! In the second game, we faced the Abominable Throwmen. Falling behind early by a score of 4-2, we then tightened up our cup and played good enough offense to go on a 6-0 run and end the half leading 8-4. In the second half, we just dominated the opposition, and ended the game by racking up a score of 15-8. A very impressive win. In terms of defense, the team has really come together to form an impressive cup defense. We'll be using it a lot from now on, seeing as it almost always leaves our opponents scrambling to complete their passes. Despite any wrong opinions to the contrary, our zone defense is awesome...its something we should really be proud of. A major part of both of our wins was the success we had in the cup, at the mids, and in the deep positions. Great job by all! As for our offense, we did really well when we had patience and methodically drove down the field with short-to-medium range passes. We also had some nice hucks, though they were fortunately not to frequent. Something we still need to work on a little as a team is getting good crisp cuts when our opponents are playing man defense, as well as clearing out a little more in goalline situations. As far as breaking the cup goes, we've got that down to a science. So overall, the offense did really well today, as the scores show. Now for some mentions for individual efforts: Mao: Nice handling against both the cup and man defense, and some nice dancing with Alan in a few places. Great play in the cup as the deep man, knocking the disc away from grasping opponents. As always, some really beautiful throws as well. Great performance. Anya: Great handling, as well, and nice play in the cup as a mid, keeping those holes from being taken advantage of. Good cuts on O, nice catches in some tough places, and great spirit. Megan: Nice play both in the cup itself and as a mid. Special praise for the mindfullness to step in and slow down the other team's offense when the cup had fallen behind. Nice catches, nice throws...not a bad day's work. Michelle: Awesome playing out there today, catching some nice mid-range throws that were really tough ones to grab. Great patience out there on offense, waiting for the right throw before sending the disc into the air. And nice job cutting off the poppers in cup defense. Sean: Sometimes its hard to believe Sean's only a freshman with the way he plays. Amazing is the only way to describe it. Great offensive work, catching a number of passes in the endzone and making an equal number of well-placed throws. Amazing defense as well when playing short deep in the cup...especially the play where Sean swatted the disc away twice in a matter of seconds. First time we've seen that done. Sarge: Nice playing out there today. Some great cuts back to the disc on the sideline, as well as some really pretty throws. Nice work as a mid today as well, and some impressive bids (even when the disc was out of bounds)...thats the love of the game, right there. Jeff: Wonderful job in the cup today, shutting down the opposition's handlers before they got a chance to throw. Some spectacular catches as well to keep offensive drives going, and great patience and presence of mind out there when handling the disc. Great job. Alan: Even an injured leg couldn't keep Alan down for long. Diving all over the place and making key throws as a handler, Alan helped keep the offense running even when the team was beginning to tire at the end of the game. Beautiful throws, including some nice ones into the endzone. Great play as well in the cup...an awesome performance. Jeanie: As said earlier, Jeanie gets special thanks and praise for her selflessness in leaving the game to help take care of a hurt teammate. While she was playing, Jeanie did a great job with some nice catches and good defense. Again, three cheers for Jeanie, showing what the love of the game is all about!!! Ray: Awesome play out there today before the injury. Not only some nice catches on offense, but some beautiful play on the defensive side of the game. Ray had a number of pass blocks, and he mastered the art of the mid position in the cup. Its fitting that his injury took place due to another awesome defensive play that saved a score by the other team. Fantastic job out there... we on the team all hope your injury heals fast, and to see you back in action as soon as possible! Dave: Rock steady as usual. Though we call him Freshman Dave he certainly turned in a senior performance this past weekend. Dave sustained a number of key scoring drives by catching swill after swill from Matt and I's ill fated arms. And I think we all also learned that Dave knows how to curse like a sailor when given the proper motivation. $%&*^*%**!!!! Excelent play out there Dave and on a side note I think Dave deserves a special pat on the back and thanks from us all for being the driving force behind CUA Ultimate this year through his tireless efforts to get WAFC and other tourneys lined up and organized. Thanks Dave we all appreciate the behind the scenes work you do. Again, great playing out there today everyone...we're now 2-1, and we haven't met a team yet that we aren't better than. Lets keep this winning streak going all the way to the tournament. Yeah CUltimate!!! Dave and Alan
