Authors and Illustrators

My students write in their own journals everyday. I ask them to write at least one sentence first and then illustrate.
As I read book to the students, I make sure to read the names of the author and illustrator. The students need to hear this on a regular basis to understand the roles of the author and the illustrator.

Invite your students to find a partner to write with. Allow them each to write a story or a sentence (depending on what they can do) and then switch papers. Have them illustrate their partner's writing.
Allow your students to select a picture (photograph, poster, picture from a magazine, etc.) and then create text of their own to go with the picture.
Read a story to your students without showing them the pictures. Allow them each to illustrate the story.
