So I haven't read this poem in a couple of years. I unearthed it while I was flipping through some old lit mags. I wrote it in 2000, my first year at Carlisle. I guess I've understood CTY for longer than I thought. Interesting. It's actually a good poem, so I'm pretty pleased about this discovery. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you....
Phenomenon
As I contemplate The phenomenon that is CTY, I understand why people return Year after year. There's a sense of belonging Here. A feeling that Maybe you aren't as weird as you think you are. Well, maybe you are. But the point is That we're all pretty weird As we wander the campus. We couch with our friends As we watch others pass by, Wonder how the HUB gets all those potatoes. We throw a Frisbee clear over our friend's head And into the street, Laugh as he goes to get it, And retrieve it the next time he "Accidentally" throws it over. We watch As the RAs lipsynch to our favorite songs. Smile As the techies play with the spotlight. We cry As we say our goodbyes at the last dance, And we wonder As we sway and sing to "American Pie" For the last time Whether another summer could ever be As good as this one has been. And we know As we walk once more across the quad, That our hearts And our thoughts Will always return to CTY.
