The Connecticut Valley Driving Club meets
the third Saturday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
at Allegra Farm on Route 82 in East
Haddam for a combined business meeting
and pot luck supper.

The ride/drive is held the following day,
usually at noon, weather permitting. For
final time and place, call Anne at 365-0295.
Yearly dues are $25 for singles or families;
$20 for seniors 65 and over.

The Club was formed to promote pleasure
driving. We plan to have many events,
including drives, hunter paces, fun days, ice
cream socials, speakers, clinics, fund-
raisers, tag sales and auctions.

We are always looking for new members
who are interested in driving. One does not
have to know how to drive to belong, nor
even own a horse. It is a friendly
atmosphere, and fun place to meet others
with the same interests. Riders are
welcome at the drives as well. New
members and guests are welcome at
meetings and/or drives. Come for the great
food, stay for the meeting and try us out!
You'll be glad you did.
Saturday evening, June 17th we had a lively meeting
attended by about 30 people. Elections of officers for
the coming year were held and we congratulate Jim
Gregory
on becoming our new President, John
Miller
as Vice President, with Janis Langston voted
in for another year as Treasurer and Laura Zukowski
as Secretary. You are doing a great job!

Our meeting has officially been changed to the third
Saturday of the month, with the ride/drive the
following day.
We decided wearing name tags at our meetings will
facilitate new and not so new members learning
each others names. The tags were provided at the
last meeting.

July 15th found us though dwindling in number, focused
on issues, discussion of insurance and upcoming guest
speakers while feasting on our delicious fare brought by
members who seem to never run out of tempting
recipes.
Our guest for July was farrier Mark Russell, who spoke
on White Line Disease. He addressed the symptoms,
causes-Lyme disease and concussion; and treatment
modalities, including shoeing corrections and antibiotics.
He also discussed the problems associated with
concussion in the driving horse vs. the riding horse.
Mark answered our questions about the trends in horse
breeding, namely drafts with large flat hooves, QH
comparatively tiny feet under big halter-type bodies, and
Morgans, Saddlebreds, Standardbreds having more
stifle problems.
He numbered the pros and cons (mostly pros) of pads,
borium and different types of shoes, and passesd
around samples for us to see.
We enjoyed Mark as a gracious speaker and thank him
for coming to increase our knowledge on the many topics
he covered while competing with a driving rain on the
metal roof!

Our next meeting is August 19th at 6:30
p.m. SHARP! Dr. Frank Pelka will be our
guest speaker.
