Courtney Thorne-Smith in Complete Woman Magazine, June/July '97

Courtney Thorne-Smith, the captivating star who's been through it all on Melrose Place in her role as Allison, takes time out to chat with CWs Martha Carlson, about life, love and her last season on MP

"The hardest part about a break-up, for me, is that I cant remember what I did before I the relationship."

The big news is that this was your last season on Melrose Place. Why did you decide to leave?

Although Ive had a great five years, I just felt that five years was a long time and it was time to move on.

What will you miss most about Malrose?

The wonderful friends I made on the set.

What will you miss the least?

The drive to work!

You worked with many of the same actors for five seasons. What was that like?

The first couple of years, people were looking for in-fighting and gossip, but the worst thing that happens is that the cast and crew date each other. We actually spend time together off the set and its really nice.

Whats coming up for you the rest of this year?

My movie, Chairman of the Board, opens in September.

Now its time for some fun, getting-to-know-Courtney, questions. What's your favorite Indulgence?

Candy, candy, candy! Yesterday I was walk-ing around with a bag of meringue cookies I gave up candy for the new year and somehow convinced myself that meringue cookies, which are just sugar and eggwhites, aren't candy!

Then how do you stay so fit?

My new thing is running. I also do yoga and the StairMaster ... I do something almost everyday. I play golf, too, (but) golf doesn't really keep you fit. A friend of mine just started golfing and he says it's really aerobic. I say, "You're dreaming!"

Do you have a motto you live by?

Stay grateful.

What about a can't-live-without beauty item?

Sunscreen.

Do you have any beauty rituals?

I have tons of them! Today, in fact, is my day of beauty. I'm going to get a massage, facial, manicure and pedicure. One thing about being an actress is that people always want things from you-time, photos, acting!-so it's important for me to just relax.

What would be a fantasy date?

I had a great date a few months ago... He came over and brought sushi, so he fed me immediately, which is always smart. Then he took me to see some terrible action movie. That's the way to win my heart!

Your favorite body part--on yourself?

My favorite thing about my body is that it's very strong.

Your least favorite part?

I've always wanted to have smaller breasts - fit, little, athletic-girl breasts so that I could wear tank tops and spaghetti straps. I'm always threatening to get a breast reduction - I have had many a boyfriend argue with me about that!

TALKIN' ABOUT LOVE

Like MP's Allison, Courtney is looking for the right man to love...

Where do you meet men to date?

The corner store! No - the last few men I got serious with I met through friends. Now, I'm looking. I'm not choosing singlehood, I just haven't met anybody I'd want to get serious with.

Do your friends set you up on dates?

I've been set up. It's difficult - if somebody says, "I have a friend who wants to go out with you," I say, "Me or Allison?" Because, thank God, we're very different women. They think they're going to swoop in and rescue some insane, whiny girl.

What do you think keeps that spark alive in a romance?

If you find out, please tell me! I think that if both people stay curious and keep changing that naturally keeps the spark alive.

What about getting over a relationship? How do you do it?

Friends! I went through a bad break-up about a year and a half ago, which is probably why I haven't dated much (lately)...The hardest part for me about a break-up is that for a while I can't remember what I did before I had that person in my life. Right after my last break-up I bought a computer thinking I'd have all this free time. Well, lo and behold, two weeks later I had no free time because my life had filled in again. But you forget what you did with your time as a single person.

Have you felt love at first sight?

I thought I felt love at first sight a number of times. My mom gave me a pin that says, "I will always cherish my initial misconceptiaons about you." I think I usually fall in love before the first phone call and then it's a series of disappointments!
