The Park This may be my favorite stadium not for any one reason, but for the entire package. It was built in 1950, but there have been quite a few improvements in recent years. The latest is the Reading Eagle Pool Pavilion, a tiered swimming pool in right field, which can be booked for games by groups.
In left field, theres a wooden deck, creatively called The Deck, where one can purchase beer. Unlike some ballparks, where the beer area is in foul territory and it is difficult to see the game, this one is in fair territory over the left field wall and offers good views of the action. (Not that it matters to me. I cant remember the last time I had a beer at a game. No, not because I'm drunk when I arrive. I go for the baseball, not for the beer.) Just below and to the right of The Deck, there are several tiered rows, enabling fans to stand and watch the game. To the right of the beer area are seats, extending as far as the scoreboard in center.
There is a food court behind the stands in right. You can buy the standard ballpark fare under the grandstand at very reasonable prices. Fans can watch the action on televisions while they wait on line.
There are a number of mascots four, I believe. Their leader is Screwball, a baseball-headed something or other. He is very visible during games.
A very nice picnic area is close to the action, right past third base. Next to that is a Viking ship, which is raised, complete with singing fat lady (a guy in drag) when Reading wins. |
