That game ended about 3:40. Many people just relaxed for the next hour or so until the pre-game ceremonies began. Kids used flattened cardboard boxes to slide down the hill.
Around 4:45, the main event started. Players from Williamsport lined the base paths between first and third, holding flags for each nation that participates in Little League baseball. Players from the 16 teams competing in Williamsport, along with the umpires, were on the field as well for the national anthems of Japan and the U.S. Tommy John and Jim Palmer were presented with awards.

As the day progressed, more and more fans set up camp on the hills. The photo above was taken from about the same spot as the second photo on the previous page, as Japan and Louisville were warming up for the World Championship Game. Empty for most of the day, the stands were now full, too. The Louisville families are behind the third base dugout, dressed in yellow.

Excitement was in the air as Louisville, the visiting team, came to bat. The crowd exploded as the second batter of the game, Aaron Alvey, drove the first pitch he saw over the right centerfield fence for a home run, for what would turn out to be the lone run in the game. Left, Alvey is congratulated by his teammates after touching home. Alvey struck out 11, walked 2 and surrendered 3 hits on his way to ensuring that his run would be enough to make Louisville the 2002 Little League world champions.
