Central Islip, NY (Long Island) - Citibank Park
Return to List of Ballparks
The Park
Citibank Park in
quack Central Islip, NY, is home to the quack Long Island Ducks of quack the independent Atlantic League.  Once inside, it quack was dj vu all over quack again.  Like most of the quack new parks, theres the aisle separating the lower quack and upper seats, wrap around con-quack-course, upper level luxury boxes, 3 tiers quack of ads on the outfield wall.  Nice enough, but quack lets just say if youve seen quack the Somerset Patriots Commerce Bank Ballpark, youve quack seen Citibank Park. Right down to the VW outside.

Oh, Im sorry, are all those quacks annoying?  Try listening to an endless stream of those, made by authentic team duck calls, for three hours.

I met two team employees here.  First, there was the usher, who while I was standing way out in the right field corner, even with the wall, asked me not to take pictures while a batter was hitting (the visiting team was up, in case youre interested) because the flash may bother him.  Oh, p-lease.  Sure, maybe it would be a distraction, particularly if the photographer is behind a dugout, lets say, but thats part of being on this particular stage.  Im sure Barry Bonds would love to have this usher in the stands to stop the barrage of flashes as each pitch is thrown to him.  Maybe hed already have over 1000 home runs.

Then, I met Uncle George, as he called himself, the Operations and Facility Manager, who could not have been nicer.  He spotted me taking a picture on the concourse, struck up a conversation, and at my request, escorted me to the upper level for a few minutes to show me around and let me snap a few pictures.  Thank you, Uncle George.
That Day
On August 22, 2002, I saw the Ducks play the Camden Riversharks.  Camden exploded for 5 runs in the 2nd, on 3 walks, a hit batter, and two hits, one a grand slam by Brad Strauss.  The Ducks came back with one in the 3rd, but Camden added 2 more in the 4th on a homer by Yuri Sanchez.  The Ducks put in a new pitcher in the 5th, who surrendered a home run to the first man he faced, Dwight Maness.  The Riversharks went on to win, 8-1.  For Camden,
Calvin Jones pitched a scoreless 8th.  Former major leaguer Mark Whiten was 2-4 for the Ducks.  Also playing for LI was former Met Kevin Baez and David Gibralter, who I previously saw playing for Trenton and Bowie.
