That Day We (my son, his friend, my older daughter and I) saw the Curve play the Reading Phillies on April 10, 2001. It was the first stop of what was supposed to be a five game trip, but unfortunately the two games we were to attend the next day were postponed due to rain. When we arrived at the park, the kids went down to the front row and met some of the players, ground crew, and Steamer and got a few baseballs. I went to a stand on the concourse and entered the kids in drawings for some of the between innings promotions. My son was chosen for the dizzy bat race. The object of this contest is to spin around, keeping ones forehead on a wiffle bat, then run to some pre-determined finish line, in this case Steamer, who was right next to the dugout. Unlike some other ballparks, here they also blindfold the contestants. My sons opponent was a local girl his age. He didnt have a chance. After they spun around, one Curve employee directed the girl to Steamer, while another directed my son to the left field corner. Nonetheless, he had a good laugh, and received a $5 gift certificate to a local confectioner for his troubles.
The Curve won the game, 2-1. Uriel Casillas had 2 of Readings 4 hits, including an RBI double in the 7th. Altoona scored on back-to-back doubles in the 4th by J.R. House and Darren Burton. After Reading tied it, Altoona went ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th on a HR by Lee Evans. |
