| Guide to Participation | |||||||||||
| As stated in the FAQs, the participation requirement is one submission
and two critiques a month. Some of you might not feel comfortable or "qualified" to critique. That's understandable and the reason we put together this guide. After one week, please introduce yourself with a bio and writing history and/or interests. You are welcome to participate in discussions as much or as little as you feel comfortable. This is voluntary. We hope that you feel comfortable enough to pull up a chair and "chat" as well as share your writing with us. Before submitting any work for feedback, we ask that you do one critique. Critiquing (did I spell that right? <G>) doesn't mean criticize. What we mean by critiquing is offering suggestions and impressions of the work you just read. We don't expect an in-depth literary analysis of any submission. We also don't expect line-by-line editing; however, that type of nitpicking is welcome. Here are some points to keep in mind when reacting to a fiction submission: *Was the conflict clear? *Was the plot logical or believable? Original? *Why or why not were the characters well developed? Why or why not did you relate to the characters? *Did the dialogue ring true? *Any suggestions for change or development These are just some jumping off points. You're not expected to answer all these points with every submission. Some submissions might not be complete stories, or they might be creativity exercises which don't contain all the elements of fiction. In those cases, it's sufficient to write how a piece made you feel or think or any other reactions you had. While you're critiquing a submission, it might remind you of the time you were sitting on your Grammy's porch during a thunderstorm, and you were painting your lips with jellybeans. Discussions along that line are also welcome and helpful. This goes without saying--if you want feedback, please reciprocate. Critiques are a gift. Someone took the time to read, to think about, and to comment on your work. If you don't have time to critique his/her work, please send a note. The requirement of one submission and two critiques a month are a guideline. If you're a regular participant in discussions, you won't be booted from the list. Please don't use this list as a dumping ground for feedback on your work. If real life interferes with your being able to participate at all, write a note to the Moderators or to the list. We're an understanding bunch. Let's keep the lines of communication open. Sincerely, Cacoethes Scribendi listmembers |
