Dialogue Writing Exercise
Note: This exercise was adapted from those listed in Josip Novakovichs
Writing Fiction Step by Step.

Choose one of these situations and write 2 to 3 pages of dialogue. Dont worry about action or description for this exercise. The objective is to show the characters tone and mood through their speech.

Write a dialogue between two liars where one tries to impress or one-up the other. It can be about any subject. Dont worry during your writing whether or not the lies sound believable. Write it as it comes to you.
Write a dialogue between two people who are doing something physical like hiking, rock climbing, lifting weights, dancing, or whatever else. Avoid transcribing grunts and groans. The objective is to show the physical exertion and the relationship between the two characters through dialogue only.
Write a gossip scene between two or more people.
Write a scene where one character meets his/her idol. The character can be either a child or an adult. The idol can be a famous politician, rock star, actor, or whatever else.
Write a discovery dialogue. For instance, two characters could be sharing their secrets or memories or wishes. In the middle of the conversation, a piece of information surfaces to make one character question that relationship or another.

As always, have fun with it!
