RELMAJRA
A watershed project for environmental rehabilitation in foot hills of fragile Shivalik belt of Punjab, INDIA
Soils and Climate
Texture: Loamy sand to sandy loam.
Low in organic carbon and N ---- Low fertility base.
pH of soil ranges from 8.7 to 9.3; Non-saline belt.
Rainfall: 1000 mm (annual average); 80% during monsoon (JulySept.)
Mean Monthly maximum temperature: 38.2 deg.C (May)
Mean Monthly minimum temperature: 6.9 deg. C (Jan.)
PreProject Scenario
Out of 32 ha, only 2-3 ha were cultivated due to undulating land.
Only maize fodder was grown during rainy season.
Flash flood and subsequent sand and silt deposition in reservoirs.
Availability of fodder for animal was uncertain which caused low milk yield.
Components of Participatory Watershed Management Programme
Planting of grasses and trees in 59 ha catchment area.
Contour trenches in hills and in situ moisture conservation.
Construction of earthen dam of 14 m height with storage capacity 13 ha-m, spread over an area of 3 ha.
Gravity irrigation (of harvested water) through underground pipeline (3 km long) in 32 ha command area.
Introduction of alternative land use systems, improved technologies for animal husbandry, horticulture and pasture development.
Constitution of Water Users Association (WUA).
Post Project Scenario
Yield of wheat increased by two folds (by two irrigation) 35-40 q/ha and of maize up to 20 q/ha
