The Lost Soldier

We walk a field of scattered bodies, and fallen weaponry
Signs of a war that has long been over
Once more we walk these fields for a new war
No longer does the enemy fight, but surrender for the sake of their country

Our cause is to liberate the people
Many will fall in battle when it is joined
Those are the true heroes
The ones that lay down their lives
So that others may know freedom

Another battle wages now
Tanks and artillery fire across the sizzling desert
We win the battle, because many of them surrendered

Lying next at my feet is my best friend
Hit by fragments of an artillery shell
His neck sliced open and wounds to his chest
The final moments of his life
Spent far from home, fighting for the freedom of strangers

Though he has died, the cause for which he fought goes on
The country he served will remember him always in history
His family and friends will mourn his passing
And those he helped to free will celebrate the victory of his cause

This is the way of a soldier, to serve and die, if needed, for his country
To protect those that can not protect themselves
To free those without freedom
And to be remembered always as a soldier of peace
