CUB SCOUT PACK 15
2004 Pinewood Derby Rules
Read the rules and specifications found in your kit. Also read the rules below that have been provided the Pack 15 committee. Discuss your ideas with your parent or adult partner and determine a plan for the construction of your derby entry.
INSPECTION:
Each car must pass inspection by the Official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The inspectors have the right to disqualify any car that does not meet the specifications.
¯ The car must be made during the current 2003-2004 scout year.
¯ Block width at the axles must be 1 3/4 inches minimum.
¯ Overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
¯ The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
¯ The undercarriage height shall be 3/8 inches minimum.
¯ The weight of the car shall not exceed 5.00 ounces.
¯ Only parts found in the kit may be used. No bearings, bushings, springs, washers, or special wheels will be allowed.
¯ Axles must be placed in pre-cut grooves.
¯ Wheels may be sanded to remove the manufacturing burrs and imperfections, but the treads must be left essentially flat and at their original width.
¯ The height of the car should not exceed 2 ¾” in order to clear the finish gate.
DETAILS:
Details such as a steering wheel, driver, decals, paint and interior detailing are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the length, width, height and weight specifications. These details do not have to come from the kit. All details must be securely fixed to the car. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
PRE-RACE CHECK/ EARLY CHECK-IN:
Cars should be checked for weight and dimensions on Friday, January 23rd from 6:00 pm to 8.00 pm at the church. This is very important! Cars that do not meet the above specifications will not be allowed to race. Checking your car on Friday will save a lot of trouble for the scout on Saturday, if there is a problem with the car. If you prefer, cars may also be officially checked in at this time to help expedite check-in on race day.
RACE DAY:
Race check in begins at 8:15 am Saturday, January 24th. No cars will be allowed in the race after 9:00 am. Once cars have been inspected and checked in, only race officials may touch the cars until the races are completely over.
JUDGES DECISIONS:
Any car leaving the track will automatically be awarded third place for that heat. If the car leaves the track and interferes with the other cars, then the heat will be re-run with the two remaining cars to determine 1st and 2nd places. In all cases, the decision of the judges will be final.
Good Luck! May the best car win!
CUB SCOUT PACK 15
2004 Pinewood Derby Award Categories
This year we have expanded the categories of winners to include not only the fastest cars overall, but these additional categories as follows:
F Most Creative design - Anything goes in this area, judges will be looking for the car with highly unusual characteristics! Some examples from past years are a toothpaste tube, a pencil, Bat Mobile, etc.
F Shows Most Scout Spirit - Any design that would be representative of BSA Scouting and would promote Scout Spirit.
F Looks Most Like an Animal - Any design of an animal is the concept here, maybe a panther or even a hornet, its up to the scout.
F Just remember, not only must the design be creative but also the entry must be able to race like any other Pinewood Derby Car.
F Fastest Cars - The fastest car categories are as follows:
§ Overall fastest cars in Cub Scout Pack 15 will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. This is based on having the fastest eight cars, determined by total number of points scored during the six qualifying heats each car will run, compete in a double elimination tournament until we have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place car.
§ Fastest car in each den will receive an award, based on points scored during the six qualifying heats and finish in tournament.
F Judges will pick each category winner and the car’s placing will determine who’s the fastest in Pack 15 and each den. No scout will win more than one award, so scouts pick the area you want to win and give it your best!
F All judges’ decisions will be final.
