| "A furious blast of primitive energy, mixing the spirit of garage fuzz with mod rock, the Carlsonics (a side project of We Are Vikings' Mike Scutari and Ed Donohue) find the perfect medium between the primal fury of the Stooges and the kinetic energy of the Who. As such, riffs reign supreme, with big, incessant choruses and huge, rolling drums carrying the sturdiest of rock grooves. Although a little more hard-edged than the pop-inflected lo-fi of We Are Vikings, enthusiasts of the pure garage aesthetic will certainly not be disappointed. Overall, an EP that kicks out the jams with abandon." Matt Fink, AMG | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| "True to the Arrco label's roster, the debut full-length from the Carlsonics is a slab of big and sludgy yet melodic garage rock with a British Invasion mod groove. Combining the grit of the Stooges and the rock & roll pomp of the Who, these Washington, D.C., noisemakers kick it like it's Detroit at the dawn of the '70s ("Fucked Up and Out of Line" with its "MIA in the U.S.A." verse could be Iggy). Sure, it doesn't sound entirely innovative, but innovation hardly matters with songs that have a Between the Buttons-era Stones vibe ("Ice People") or an unbeatable Kinks-y jangle ("Tonight We Dine on Fumes"). That said, the best track on the album is "Courage," a dark and slinky surf guitar number that stands out because it is simply the most unique. Garage rock might be the most overdone genre in 2003, but the Carlsonics have their fuzz and fury down pat. They rock it about as well as the Hives and the Caesars with an added touch of Mick Jagger sass that goes a long way." Charles Spano, AMG | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| More about the new album... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "Every summer needs an anthem, and I hereby declare The Carlsonics' Emergency Door to be the Summer 2003 Anthem Album. Strutting like Iggy and The Stooges at a backyard high school kegger, all it takes is one listen through Emergency Door's opener, "The Leisure Class," with its singular, repeating refrain of "you tried to complicate me / you tried to tell me what to do," to get knocked square in the jaw by the band's sleazy swagger. The guitars of Ed Donohue and John Passmore swirl in dirty psychedelic revelry behind the snotty vocals of Aaron Carlson, whose nasally drawl sounds something like Joey Ramone after a few glasses of Jim Beam to loosen the phlegm up, while Mike Scutari (drums) and Nikki West (bass) provide the band's pummeling backbone. The resulting 11 tracks is a fucked up, fuck-all nosebleed of an album that demands to be turned up as party goers keep arriving and stumble through the house looking for the keg, and begs you to flip off the neighbor next door when they shout over the fence to complain about the noise and all the red, blue and yellow plastic cups that keep getting tossed over into his yard. "Yeah, yeah... whatfuckingever, pops!" There's nothing flash here, nothing to make you scratch your head and reflect on the album's subtlety -- and there doesn't need to be. Emergency Door is meant to be played at maximum volume. And don't worry about mess, there's plenty of time to clean up before the folks get home tomorrow night. Bring on summertime!" By Craig Young.
