Cedar County, Nebraska The following item apeared in the (???) newspaper in 2001Flags, flowers decorate Magnet Cemetery
FLAGS WAVED in the gentle breeze Sunday, May 27, at the Magnet Cemetery. Proceeds from a luncheon, served in the Magnet Town Hall, help pay for upkeep and improvements. In the year of 1905. the Board of Trustees of the Village of Magnet purchased two acres of land from William and Adelle Soost for the sum of $160 to be used as the cemetery. There were 238 plots surveyed and laid out. The first person buried in the cemetery was Andrew Bloomquist in September 1905. He was killed by falling from a hay stack. In 1932, a deed was prepared for the transfer of the cemetery from the Village of Magnet to the Magnet Cemetery. Mr. Ernest was the first caretaker. Following him were George Jones. A.L. Henrickson, Bill Long, Jerald Henrickson and Floyd and EIvera Dawson. Dan and Shirley Dawson and family have taken part in caring for the cemetery in the last few years, with the help of Dale Bloomquist. There are 22 service men buried in thet cemetery. Since the fall of 1991 flags and flagpoles have lined both sides of the middle driveway. A new white fence was installed in front of the cemetery and pine trees were planted around the outside perimeter in 1996. This was done by a special donation from the families of the deceased. This year a gazebo is being built in memory of Floyd and Elvera Dawson with their memorial donation and with proceeds of the luncheons served on the Sunday before Memorial Day. This was the sixth year for serving the luncheon and, of course, it couldn't be done without the community's help in donating salads and pies and all the good help in serving and cleaning up. |
