Sunday morning around 1.00 a.m. Aug. 6, 1967, the elevator started on fire. This elevator was the Saunders-Westrand Co. or later in years was known as the Claussen Elevator. It burned down to the ground, plus the contents in the elevator. Victor Johnson and Frank Bloomquist were among the first farmers starting their own farms when Magnet first began. Mr. Bloomquist's grandson, Dwight still lives on and farms this original farmstead. This community was a big farm community in the early years and is still this day. Most sons and grandsons of the earlier settlers carrying on the farm work. We must not forget the 'Corn Cake. This was favorite tobacco three old Grandies smoked in their old cob pipe. Grandma Black, Grandma Winget and Grandma Dawson enjoyed every puff on their pipe as they rocked in their favorite rocking chair. There has been many fun things going on in this Good Ole Town. With dances, shiveries for the new married couples, circus, basketball games, baseball games, sleigh riding down main street, rabbit and squirrel hunting and the big feed afterwards and one more big thing that always went on every Thursday night in Magnet that brought people coming from all over. The Free Shows every one enjoyed and never will forget. In each and everyone's own mind they have their own greater memories of this great town where they once lived. Throgh the years, Magnet had its shares of disasters. They went through the blizzard of 1915 starting February 1, the heaviest snow fall for a long time. Railroads were blocked and telephones out of service. Febr. 11 the winds blew strong from the northwest and snow fell in liberal quantity. March was no better. On March 11, the third blockade of the winter proved to be the longest and worst of the season. On the evening of Febr. 7, 1936, a severe blizzard struck most of northeast Nebraska. Heavy snow, strong northwest wind and sub-zero temperatures. Temperatures remained below zero every day
