Again we rise slowly, and after breakfast
(bleech -- again!), we drive the Many Glacier valley scoping for wildlife.
As Carol complains about the absence of critters, some deer appear behind
me, but move too quickly for a photo. After lunch at the Many Glacier
Hotel (okay, but expensive), we stop at the basement store only to see
some bighorn ewes and lambs right outside the window peering in at us.
Carol pulls out the camera and gives chase as they trot down the road behind
the hotel. She gets some great shots as they hit the flower garden
outside the service buildings.
We join the 2 pm ranger hike to Redrock Falls
and are treated to a wildflower lesson. We see a great variety of
flowers, with lots of bear grass in bloom and surprisingly thick vegetation.
Despite our best efforts, our brains are on vacation mode and our retention
of the wildflower names lasts but a few days. The falls are not terribly
high, but are very pretty on the striking red boulders. On the way
back from the falls, we are joined on the trail by a whitetail deer.
He fell in line for a few yards, and then cut off through the thick vegetation
down to the lakeshore. Lots of sun and little wind make the hike
hot and buggy, but lots of bug spray and sunblock do their job! However,
by the time we made it back to the hotel, John was suffering from the heat
and not drinking enough water. Dinner at Swiftcurrent again is remarkably
bad, but after another fruitless scoping drive down the canyon, some ice
cream while watching the mountain goats on the mountainsides compensates. |
