Use your browser's BACK button to return to this pagespacer Teachers' Day was celebrated with much gaiety by the teachers and students of SMK Bukit Goh, on the morning of May 16. The national theme for 2001 was 'The Teaching Profession is Our Shared Responsibility'. We had our own theme, though, which was ' Respect Your Teachers'. Short and sweet.
The celebrations started off with a morning assembly involving teachers and students from both the morning and afternoon sessions. There were also a number of invited guests.
Highlights of the assembly were the Education Minister's message, read by our Principal, and a fiery religious sermon by guest speaker Tn Hj Zainal Ariffin b Darus.
Next, our teachers, led by Cikgu Jamal b Musa, took the 'Teachers' Oath'. It was all very solemn, so we were relieved when they broke into song, entertaining us with
'Guru Malaysia', 'Harapan' and 'Di sini Rumahmu dan Syurgamu'. Cikgu Mastura Nadzri deserves a pat on the back for getting all the teachers to participate. Our Principal was all smiles upon receiving a unique present from the members of the Prefects' Board. It was our way of saying 'thanks'.
Students were surprised to find out after the assembly that there was free food and drink waiting for them at the canteen. We later discovered that our teachers had sponsored this feast. Gracias!
Next on the agenda was a Telematch. Our teachers were divided into five teams. Among the unusual games were 'rolling the discus and shot putt', 'filling a bottle with water using a straw', 'white monkey' and 'water balloons'. 'White Monkey' was a load of fun!
We next trooped into the hall for a variety show. And what a show it turned out to be! SMK Bukit Goh students put up three performances, namely :
- a nasyid [ religious ] song entitled 'Kasih Kekasih'
- a Dikir Barat [ lively Kelantanese scat style ] number by 5AG entitled 'Wahai Guru'
- a syair recitation by Mohd Azhar and Siti Roziana of 5AB
Now it was time to have some fun at our teachers' expense. The show's comperes, Mohd Faizal b Che Harun and Siti Roziana bt Mat Hussin [ both 5AB students ], pulled teachers' names at random and the 'lucky' souls had to perform onstage. We salute them for being so very sporting. What did they end up doing?
- Cikgu Mastura Nadzri sang a Hindi song with Mohd Azhar [ 5AB ], entitled 'Hamko Hamiset Choralo'
- Cikgu Solahudin assumed the role of a sports newsreader and delivered the F1 news
- Cikgu Haryani sang a duet with Cikgu Ruhani Md Isa, 'twas an old Melayu Asli song
entitled 'Gurindam Jiwa'- Ustaz Zakeria read the news in the Javanese* dialect. [ *nothing to do with Sun Microsystems, we assure you ]
- Cikgu Zuzitah sang 'Pandang - pandang, Jeling - jeling' with Yusrizal [ a student ]
- Ustazah Norasnida and Syed Anas acted out a scene from the cartoon series 'Doraemon', with the Ustazah as Doraemon and Syed Anas, Nobita. They had us in stitches!
- Cikgu Hatijah Gan read us some poetry
- Cikgu Nur 'Ashiqin read us some more poetry in that oh - so - sweet voice of hers.
- The most romantic couple in SMK Bukit Goh, Papa Zek and Mama Anida, performed a short sketch as Tun Perpatih Putih and Princess Hang Li Po
- Puan Hanifah and Pn Wan Norihan turned sales promoters, and waxed lyrical about kitchenware. Did a good job of it too ..
The show ended at Zohor time, and we reluctantly made our way home. Wonder what they'll think of next year.
