English Fest 2001

an honest - to - goodness report by Anon

This year's Kuantan District English Fest was held at Sek Men Keb Alor Akar [ SMKAA ], Kuantan on April 28; from 8am to 4 pm.

Our entourage consisted of all the English teachers and 40 hand - picked students, who would be working on two - hour shifts. Everyone was looking forward to seeing
Tn Hj Asruddin b Hj Abas, the beloved ex - SMKBG English teacher who's now the Senior Assistant of SMKAA.

SMK Bukit Goh's contribution for this year's fest was the spelling game, Spellbinder. Participants are given a card with a word written on it. They are then required to come up with at least ten new words based upon various combinations of alphabets from the original word.

There's a time limit, of course, but most participants manage to come up with ten words in practically no time at all.

The day started off very badly, with the bus driver actually forgetting [ or so he said ] to pick up our students from school. Some of them started to panic, but had no choice other than to stay put as SMK Bukit Goh is a long 24km away from Kuantan town.

This is boooring ..... show me the pics!

Luckily, the English teachers staying in Kuantan turned up early on that day. They went to work right after the opening ceremony, but after a while began to wonder why there was not a Bukit Goh student to be seen anywhere. If they only knew ...

To cut to the chase, those brave few [ who shall remain anonymous ] took charge for the first two hours and had a hard time controlling the eager mob of youngsters from schools all over town.

There were even a few who tried to jump queue, but this threat was quickly defused by a certain burly male teacher who goes by the initials of AA.

When reinforcements finally arrived at around 10am, things were pretty much under control; save for a few imbeciles who had to be shown the door.

From then on it was smooth sailing, with the crowd finally thinning out around 3pm. 4pm saw us packing up and saying our goodbyes. Thank goodness the bus driver remembered to pick us up at the appointed time. Perhaps the fact that he hadn't been paid yet did wonders for his memory.

All said and done, we had a good time and are looking forward to next year's English Fest.

Oh, we also took some photos. Click on the thumbnails ... you know the rest
