MARÍTIMO 1-0 RANGERS
HOME
Makeshift lone striker Manduca grabbed the only goal of an unbelievably open game at the Estádio dos Barreiros last night, to sink Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. The final score finished 1-0 to the verde-rubros, although each team could have scored 3 or 4 goals each.
Thurs 16 Sept 2004  -  20:00  -  Estádio dos Barreiros, Funchal

The visitors made an instant drive for the early goal, with a frantic start to an excellent game. Spanish striker Nacho Novo, unmarked inside the penalty box, headed Chris Burke’s cross wide of the near post. The Spanish striker, last season playing with Dundee, was given a second chance to open the scoring having wasted his first, but his headed shot struck the post.

Croatian international Dado Prso, a star of Monaco’s Champions League campaign last season, also had a great scoring opportunity, but his headed shot sailed wide of the far post with a static Marcos left as an onlooker.
The Brazilian beat two Scottish defenders to fire Marítimo into the lead. It was the makeshift strikers first goal for Marítimo since signing in the summer.

Léo Lima, playing a man of the match performance, nearly doubled the lead with his spectacular 25 yard strike. The Brazilian’s shot was destined for the top corner of the net had it not been for an equally spectacular save from the German Stefan Klos.

The score could have been 3-3 at half time, but Marítimo entered the interval with the advantage, and the verde-rubros had chances to extend the lead during the second half as well.
However it wasn’t just the visitors creating good chances. Alan’s early low drive was wellsaved by Rangers goalkeeper Stefan Klos, who must have felt the sting on his hands.

On loan midfielder Luís Filipe weaved his way through two Rangers defenders beautifully, but Klos was quick to narrow the angle and the midfielder slotted his shot just wide of the far post. However Marítimo’s attacking tactics looked promising an with only 26 minutes played, the deadlock was broken.

Manduca was quickest to react when Stefan Klos could only parry Léo Lima’s stinging drive.
Klos had to be alert moments later however, when substitute Joel Santos, who scored in Saturdays 3-0 win over Penafiel, fired a beautifully timed volley into the far corner of the goal, but Stefan Klos’ superb reflexes were to prevent the verde-rubros from doubling the lead yet again.

Were it not for the heroics of Stefan Klos, Marítimo could already have had one foot into the second round of the UEFA Cup, but the game finished 1-0, and we will have to go through all the drama yet again in two weeks when the verde-rubros travel to Glasgow for the second leg, in a tie that is far from over.

Goal scorer Manduca flashed a shot marginally wide of the goal, and the ever impressive Léo Lima, a former Brazilian Under 21 international, tried his luck from the half-way line with a superb effort that flew just over the bar and onto the green netting.

Nacho Novo tallied his miss-count to three when he found himself one on one with goalkeeper Marcos, however the goalkeeper was equal to the shot and prevented the equaliser with his legs. The visitors looked completely lost, as Marítimo controlled the game and created chances on the counterattack, with right back Ferreira always eager to bomb forward and support the attack.

Alan looked certain to score when he raced clean through onto Rangers’ goal, but Rangers midfielder Boumsong did enough to stop him and the pacey Brazilian’s shot flew wide of the goal.
