Paramarthasara of Adisesa
English Translation and Study

L. Sulochana Devi

Paramarthasara is a prakarana on Advaita. It contains most of the important principals of the school of Advaita in eighty-five verses. Paramarthasara is the first manual on Advaita and was composed three centuries earlier than the period of Sankara by Adisesa.  Adisesa in this work makes a survey of the entire philosophy of Advaita contained in all the sacred teachings available up to his time.

"Sulochana Devi's introduction to the book expertly notes how Adisesa uses Sankhya concepts and terminology to present pre Gaudapada Advaitic thought. Sulochana Devi has also achieved a literal translation that is simple, beautiful and at the same time eminently readable.

The original accompanies the translation, which is also very simple Sanskrit. The excellent production makes the book a valuable addition to the expanding library of Indian scriptures in English"
