Ham Radio

With Ham Radio being one of my favorite hobbies, I couldn't help but create a page dedicated to it. My callsign is KB8VTU . If you are interested in Ham Radio, I hope that you find this page useful. By the way, I usually check into the Mid-Michigan Traffic Net on the 147.300 + repeater Monday-Saturday at 2130 hours local time. I also monitor the 146.800 - repeater quite often. I have been a Ham since December 1994, and my 12 year old daughter just received her license on 07/01/1997. Her callsign is KC8IBH . Here she is making a QSO on an IC-735.

We hope to see you down the log.

On 08/18/1997 I was using my satellite tracking program to see when the MIR was going to fly by so that I might hope for an "eye-ball" contact. It was supposed to come in at 60 degrees, and it did. I couldn't believe how bright and big it was. So if you want to amuse your friends or family, they may be quite interested in seeing the MIR. I wasn't using any optical equipment, but hope to do that next time. When looking for the MIR, it must be fairly dark on Earth, and there must be light appx. 200 miles in space. Usually shortly after sunset when the stars are appearing. Let me know if you see it.

Click here if you are serious about trying to make a QSO with MIR either by voice or packet, for instructions and frequencies. The state-side QSL route is also listed at the end of this document.

I have made two contacts with the MIR so far, and I suggest either using a Tracking Program to have an idea of when the MIR will be passing over, or just leaving your radio (including an HT with a rubber-duck antenna) on the simplex frequency that they are using. That frequency used to be 145.550, but lately they have been using 145.985. If you hear a voice, it's usually either one of the astronauts, or someone else calling them. When you call them, call "CQ R0MIR" several times followed by your call-sign. If you hear a lot of noise, it's their packet station. Happy Hunting!

Here are our new good friends (and witnesses to my second MIR contact). This photo was taken at the Lakeport State Park where the QSO took place. BTW, I am the good-looking guy at the far right, with my hands on the shoulders of Angela (KC8IBH).

If you are not licensed but are interested, feel free to ask any questions you might have.
