History
1538 - Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada completed the Spanish conquest and founded the kingdom of New Granada
1717 - Bogota became the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada.
1780 - Many people revolted agianst Spanish rule. The revolt was crushed, but served as a spark for the independence movement
1810 - Most parts of New Granada declare their independence from Spain
1819 - Simon Bolivar defeated Spanish troops near Bogota and becomes first president of Gran Colombia
1853 - A new constitution seperates church and state.
1886 - Colombia becomes a republic
1899-1902 - civil war breaks out known as the War of the Thousand Days.
1903 - Panama revolted after the senate refused a treaty allowing for the construction of the Panama canall. U.S. helps Panama gain it's independence.
1922 - U.S. agrees to pay Colombia for the loss of Panama.
1958-1974 - Government slowly restores confidence in the economy and government.
1980s - The government's attempts to crack down on drug cartels is met with violent resistance.
1948 - Assassination of the Liberal party leader triggers a period of chaos and turmoil known as La Violencia.
1993 - Colombian government made significant progress in combating the powerful Medellin drug cartel.
1995 - Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela form the Group of Three, a free-trade organization to eliminate all tariffs and quotas on trade between these countries
1996 - After allegations that drug-traffickers financed his campaign, President Pizano was indicted by the government prosecutors on charges of illegal enrichment, falsifying documents, attempted cover-up, and electoral fraud. Congress then cleared Pizano of all charges.
