How to Train Your Cat To Walk on a Leash

On this page you will see various steps on how to train your cat to wear a harness and walk on a leash. If you follow these steps, your cat may actually go outside while under your control. I am not promising anything, but if you would like to train your cat, do it when he/she is young, and don't ever give up.

Steps

1. Get a proper fitting harness. Either a figure 8, a H-Harness, or even a dog's harness. Make sure that you can always fit two fingers between the harness and the cat.

2. Next, get the cat used to the harness by letter him/her smell it, and let him/her get her smell on it.

3. After you cat is used to the harness, start putting it on him/her. When it is on your cat, let him/her wear it for 5 to 10 minuters the first time and then progress in minutes every other time you put it on.

4. When the cat is completly comfortable with wearing the harness let him/her walk around with it on for a good majority of the day.

5. Next, get a leash, but not a long one. With this leash, your cat will wear it around the house freely. When you cat wears this leash always supervise him/her because your cat can easily get tangle up in household items. The cat should wear this for about 5 to 10 minutes the first time and progress in minutes like the harness.

6. When your cat starts getting used the the leash behind him/her, star holding it up behind him/her like you're walking your cat.

7. Walk behind your cat for a few days to get the cat used to this new concept. Now you got your cat walking on the leash, but inside.

8. Now you can bring you cat outside, but always remember to put an id tag on its harness. Also be careful that you hold on tightly to the leash because you cat can easily get excited with all the new and loud noises.

9. If you want your cat to walk in a strait line or on the sidewalk you will have to follow an extra few steps.

10. When you go outside, and if you want you cat to walk on the sidewalk, only walk on the sidewalk and dont let your cat go on the grass.

11. First put a few treats on the sidewalk in a straight line to entice him/her to walk just in a straight line.

12. If you cat wants to wander off, just stay on the sidewalk and don't move. This will annoy the cat because he/she wants to roam around, but he/she can't. You should also give you cat a slight tug to get him/her back on the sidewalk.

13. Keep on doing this for as many days as it takes, and try to walk your cat daily.

Depending on you cat, whether he/she is eager to learn or completely lazy, you might be able to enjoy an evening walk with your cat. Just follow these steps and take you cat out daily and he/she will come running to the sound of the leash, and will be begging to go outside, just like my cat.
