Who Left all this Mess? (1/29/04)

Ugh... This is a difficult match to make a recap on, but here is your information about Match 7, in Round 2. It was a match between Edward & James, and the team of Will & Charlie. The match started out yesterday and left off with a score of three to one, in Will and Charlie's favor. Later that day, Edward and James cave up with a master strategy to attempt to stop their indefinite winning streak. (I might reveal that strategy once the tourney is over.) The match continued today during the morning, and the four players sat down again to complete the match. It soon became much more complex however. Edward and James' plan worked out for the first two rounds, causing Will and Charlie to call two incorrect counter-kempses in a row (one each), tying the score at three all. What was once a blowout was now anyone's game. The round continued as usual, when James shouted "Counter-kemps!" and Charlie and Will's duo shouted "Double kemps!" simultaneously. We all know what happens when calls are made at the exact same time. Here was no different. Arguments were started as to who was first, and the audience's varying opinions did not serve the situation any better. If James was first, the score would have been four to three, but if their opposition was first, the match would be over with Will and Charlie as the winners. After an agreement was finally made, the match was redone, and once again the score was set at three apiece. The score was eventually transformed into a four to four tie, also known as deuce. Will and Charlie called a correct kemps, and were within one point of advancing to the following round in the tournament. Unfortunately the next round in the match was chaos, but less so than the first event... After Will and Charlie called an incorrect kemps, James called "Kemps" to his partner, Edward. James believed that the score should then be six to five, but after further review of the tournament rules, the cards must be dealt again after an incorrect kemps call. The score was then set to a five to five tie. Consider this. Both teams tied at one to one, they tied at three to three, they even tied at four to four, and this five to five tie marked the fourth tie of the match. Fortunately this would be the final controversy of the match, a stat on its own which numbered at two. James called a correct counter-kemps on Charlie making the score six to five, and then a clean kemps call by James ended the match, finally, with a score of seven to five. Phew! That was quite an exciting match-up! But expect more mayhem in round three, which will commence as soon as possible!

Tournament Status (1/27/04)

The tournament is running along smoothly, and because so much has happened, I have a lot to say. This will recap the matches that have been played, and the scores if known. Each of the matches are numbered, starting with 1 for the teams playing at the top of the bracket. I will refer to those numbers during this update.

Match 1: Match 1 was between Edward & James and Elliot B. & Liam. James and Edward started off with a three-point lead, but in a series of three suspicious counter kempses in a row, Liam and Elliot B. tied the match. James' duo scored another point, making the score four to three. The next match was very troublesome. After James matched four cards in his hand, Edward called "Kemps, and it's over." As he completed the word "and" Liam shouted "Counter-kemps on James!" Although it was clear who had called it first, James and Edward opted to give both teams a point and head to the next round; the score five to four. Elliot and Liam drew the next blood and tied it up. Edward and James countered that with two clean kempses, and the match was over in their favor.

Match 2: Match 2 hasn't begun yet, but will include Will & Charlie facing off against Francesco & Grant.

Match 3: Match 3 was a very exciting match between second-ranked Brandon & Anthony against eleventh-ranked Andy M. & Matt. Every expected a blowout, but that was harder to come by than expected. Andy and Matt managed to get themselves four points, while Brandon and Anthony had only two. At this point, a major upset was predicted by everyone: a sixth grade team conquering two of the most difficult eighth grade players. After the end of that match, the day ended, and it needed to be continued later. When the four players finally set down again to finish the match, Brandon and Anthony rallied incredibly to score three points in a row, turning the score to 5-4 in the eighth graders' favor. In the next match they called "Kemps", but they were incorrect, marking the first time Brandon and Anthony did not know what each other had or thought. The score was then tied at five apiece, but Brandon and Anthony used the rest of their fire to score two straight, beating Matt and Andy by a score of 7 to 5.

Match 4: In match four, Danny & Wells faced off against the last minute replacement team for Alex F. & Jeremy, Nicky and "the guy named 'Fay'". I wasn't given much information about this match, but I do know that it ended up with Danny and Wells as the victors, beating the sixth grade team by a score of five to three.

Match 5: Match five was the most surprising match of all, resulting in the ultimate upset. The number twelve seed--that's right, the number twelve seed--beat the favorites of the tournament, Alex Y. and David, in an interesting match (that I failed to get information for).

Match 6: Match 6 was last, but not least by any means. It was Michael and Patrick against Andy D. and Jeff. Michael and Patrick drew first blood and scored two points. In an astounding turn, Andy D. and Jeff scored four straight. The following round was an unprecdented event. Between Michael and Patrick a double kemps was called, and they thought they had tied the score up, but in fact, following further inspection, Patrick had only three of a kind. The penalty for an incorrect double kemps is two points for the opposing team, so Andy and Jeff finished with a highly unusual 6 to 2 victory.

That's right! A new featured game has been put on the site! I'll try to put a game up more regularly from now on.

Upsets and Uploads (1/16/04)

As the CSB Kemps Tournament rolls along, one very surprising match kept people on the edge of their seats. Andy M. and Matt, the eleventh ranked team, is one point away from beating Brandon and Anthony, in the number two rank! If that one point is scored, not only would it create a major upset, but James and Edward are confident that without them, they could do even better. Right now the score stands 4-2, so the match isn't over yet, but once that point is scored... It will be a miracle. As for the "Uploads" part of this article: You probably have noticed by now, but when you visit this page, there is now a little animation in the site's logo. If you didn't see it already, refresh the page! If it doesn't work on your computer, tell me, and I will switch the movie file to a more computer-friendly format.

"The Fad is Dead" (1/9/04)

We all saw it coming, but today it was officially announced that Kemps was gone for good. Following a four-month reign as the school's most popular card game, the fun has been ended because of everybody's unwillingness to play (except for Brandon). Taking its place is the gambling game of Texas Hold'em Poker, which I strongly do not like. But then again, that's just how it happens. There is no doubt in my mind that Kemps will continue to be played from time to time at lunch, but it will never be the same way it was before. Plans for the giant tournament are starting to be made, and although they have not yet been posted on the Tournaments page, they will soon be. As for my point of view on the website's behalf... I'm not really that concerned at all. Although Kemps may have stopped at school, it will never stop worldwide, and my site will be aimed more towards the public than ever before. It is too bad that Kemps is not often played at CSB anymore, but everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Besides, everything that has a beginning has an end. Here's the bottom line: Kemps was great fun while it lasted, but it is simply time for it to go. The older games used to be filled with excitement and a friendly atmosphere, but that has been transformed into an everyday bore. (And that's all he wrote.)

Future Plans for this Site

As I already mentioned in the article above, the site will be made a bit more public than before. I have agreed to reveal my signals on the signals page in one week, so if you want to see them, check back then. The Zelda page (under the Random Stuff section, just in case you didn't know) has been changed and is now featuring an excellent song that plays when you visit the page. Check it out!

Quite Possibly the Biggest Game of Kemps Ever (1/6/04)

What I mean by "biggest" is not that today's match was important, but that the cards we used were over a foot tall and eight inches wide, having a larger area than a normal sheet of paper! Is was an exciting match, as players could barely see their teammate's signals, and it truly was an adventure to shuffle the cards. The match was between Ed and James versus Alex and David. After Ed and James scored two points to start the match, David and Alex came back with five straight to defeat them. Did I mention that the game was being recorded! That's right! After borrowing another video camera, our teacher recorded the game, making it the first video-recorded CSB Kemps game ever! Will these big cards bring back Kemps? We shall wait and see!

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's an Update! (1/5/04)

First off, I'd like to hope that everybody had a pleasant vacation, including a merry Christmas and a happy new year. (That's right! '04!) The weather was cold today, and many of the eighth graders chose to go down to the gym rather than be chilled to the bone upstairs, but not the true Kemps players. Only one match was played today, but it was pretty spirited, and showed that Kemps could indeed last the Winter Break. Now, about the site. I apologize about not updating the Featured Game over the weekend, but bcause of Helicopter's popularity, I figured I could feature it on the site for an additional week. ALSO, I have decided to postpone the work on the Signals section. It will later be used to reveal Ed and James' match winning signals. Until then you'll have to figure hem out yourself! Ha ha. I apologize again for the delay of this update, but I hope it was worth the wait. Keep the fad alive! Bye.
