Character:
This whole cartoon series revolves around a little boy named Gibb. He’s only 8 years old. Although he doesn’t play baseball, he always wears a baseball helmet for protection. His is a shy, innocent little kid. He’s not the most popular guy in school either. The series will be based on his little adventures as he slowly mature into a big boy and becomes recognized. But no matter how much he will grow, he will always be himself.
Character design:
First, I went over some ideas of what would be an interesting character to draw yet not as complicated. I didn’t want to come up with something that I would have a hard time replicating over and over again. However, I didn’t want a character that is so simplified that one wouldn’t be able to tell apart from other series. I also wanted a human character or at least something very similar so it would be easier to give it certain expressions. I then thought of how this character would interact with the world. After considering all of the above, I started sketching out a little boy. To give him a unique characteristic and some distinction from other series, I gave him a baseball helmet and a bat. I also gave him a pair of short and a t-shirt to wear.
For his character, I look over my sketches once again and started pitching some ideas. Since he wears a big helmet and I didn’t want this to be about baseball, I decided that he only wears it for protection and that it has nothing to do with baseball, at least for now. I also believe that this would give it some humor. Because of the size of his helmet and head, I decided for him to be an innocent kid. But at the same time, the bat shall be his influence as it empowers him and turn him into the mischief yet innocent at heart, adorable little boy that we will hopefully all come to adore.
