Hello,

I am a student here in computer science. I am currently taking a course
(cs327) in which we are working on a project which aims to improve the
SWA to the gradebook. The following URL gives a short description of
some of the improvements we'd like to make:

http://wiki.cs.uiuc.edu/SEcourse/Web-based+GradeBook

Mainly, we'd like to implement, or at least begin the design of the
following requirements (from the above URL):

1. Different permission levels are supported. At lease three levels:
students who can only browse their own data; TAs and faculty who can
access(r/w) all data of the courses they are working on; administrive
staff who can access all data of all courses.

2. Students can see statistic graphs through the web browser; TAs and
faculty can edit grades and make calculation on the data; administrive
staff can make summary analysis throuhg the courses.

I know that statistical graphs are not currently available, but I'm not
sure about some of the other requirements. Is there any way you can
shed some light on which of these features are already implemented or
those which have begun to be implemented? Also, will it be possible for
us to gain access to the source code to the project so that we can get
an idea of how the system functions? In order to make these
improvements, it is somewhat necessary to get an idea of the current
system design - be it through design documents, or the source itself.

My apologies if I have contacted the wrong person, and if so, could you
please refer me to the correct individual?

Thanks for your time
-Drew

I emailed you about this on Sunday and was wondering if you could get
back to me or refer me to the correct contact point. We're in a hurry
to get this project started and a response would be greatly
appreciated. Here's a copy of what I sent on Sunday:

11/02/00 - 5:10pm - 5:55pm
- Wrote first iteration of user stories.

11/05/00 - 6:40pm - 7:15pm
- E-mailed the following user stories to the tracker

Subject: meeting tonight and user stories

Al,

I thought I'd be able to get back from home in time for the meeting
tonight, but it doesn't look like I will.... I've put together some
user stories and here they are. I hope you get this in time for the
meeting and my absence doesn't screw things up too much..

User stories (some of these are probably already implemented, but I
figured they would be useful nonetheless):

Students can login and view grade distributions for each course and each
assignment / exam.

Students can login and view percentile rank for each course and each
assignment / exam.

Students are restricted to viewing only their own data. A secure login
scheme is required to ensure that passwords don't go out in plain view.

TA's login and view data for the courses they are working on. Access
must be restricted to only the courses they should have access to.

TA's login and update data for the courses they are working on. Some
type of concurrent access restrictions must be implemented.

TA's should also be able to view their own course data for courses they
are currently taking.

TA's and professors can access particular students' grades by entering
the course number and the students' login / ssn.

TA's and professors can post grade cutoffs for assignments / quizzes /
exams for each course they have access to.

Certain TA's should be allowed to update student data while others
should only be allowed to view student data for the courses.

Professors can login and view data for the courses they are teaching.
Professors may be able to view data for all courses - not just the ones
they are teaching.

Professors can also login and update data for courses they are
teaching. Professors should only be able to update data for their
courses (obviously).

Administrative staff have different levels of access priveleges. Some
can access courses in particular majors, while others may access any and
all courses.

Administrative staff can access summaries of the courses they are
checking. Examples include the current average of all students, grade
distributions, etc.

Administrative staff can access students' grades in particular courses
by entering the course number and the students' login / ssn.

Administrative staff can retrieve a summary of the students' standing in
all courses being taken at this time.

Administrative staff can retrieve a history of the students' standings
in all courses taken at the university.

I'm sure we can come up with more, but that's all I could think of at
the moment. Let me know what you guys think, as well as what goes on at
the meeting. Again, sorry I can't make it.

-Drew

I am the one to talk to about this. But unfortunately I cannot help
you with this. Much of what you suggest is already included, soon to
be included, or planned to be included in GradeBook
(e.g. statistics/distribution information will be available through
SWA shortly). In fact, much of my time is being spent on improvements
to the existing system. And I do not have time to coordinate
something like this. It is not possible for you to get access to the
source code. In addition, what you state above is extremely vague and
simplistic, so it is not clear exactly what you would like to do and
how you would do it.
