The New River of West Virginia
I live in southern West Virginia and most of the time I fish the Gyuandotte River. Occasionally I get to fish the great New River. The New River is one of the oldest rivers around and plus it runs north. There are several access points to the new river, Hinton Visitor Center on Rt. 20 bypass; Tug Creek Beach, Brooks Falls, Hellems Beach, and Sandstone Falls via River Road at Hinton; Meadow Creek; McCreery, Grandview Sandbar, Mill Creek, and Glade Creek off Hwy. 41 near Prince; Dun Glen and Stone Cliff near Thurmond; Cunard; and Fayette Station. All provide supreme fishing.
As far as fishing goes, The New River offers great fishing fun for smallmouth, largemouth, striped, and rock bass, walleye, musky, crappie, bluegill, carp, and catfish, both flathead and channel. The best times to fish is spring and fall during the early morning and late evening. The water temperatures during this time is between cold winter temperatures and warm summer temperatures. Causing the fish to be more active. While fishing the New River night crawlers and hellgrammites are common bait used for fishing, but if you are a artificial person like myself then I prefer top-water crank-baits, spinner baits, minnows, or crawfish. Dark-colored lures work better in murky water conditions and bright-colored lures in clear water.
So grab a pole and head to the New River, you wont be dissapointed.
