I launched at 5.15 AM from La Jolla shore with fishing buddy Trevor. It was still dark but light was starting to fill the sky. The waves were pretty big but I got thru and waited till Trevor made it thru the waves. While I was waiting I paddled out past the reserve bouys and began to troll a blue 6inch MirrOlure. Trevor joined me shortly and after not catching any bait we decided to try closer to the kelp beds. While we paddled over my lure went off on a long run. I was excited cause I thought it would be a Yellowtail. I heard yellowtail tow you around and I wanted
to feel myself getting pulled by a big fish. And pull it did for about 30 minutes. It towed me around like nothing, Trevor couldn't really fish cause he had to paddle just to keep up. After about 45 minutes we finally saw it was a shark. I couldn't believe it! But as soon as we saw it, the shark took off again towards open ocean. It got pretty far out, way past all the other boats in the area, when it stopped running and went straight to the bottom. It had been about an hour and a half and my arm got really tired. I made the big mistake of turning my rod over so I could rest, and snap! I broke the fishing pole. Later I did it again. It was pretty funny watching me fight this thing with almost no
fishing pole left. After about 2 hours and 15 minutes I finally had it up. It was wrapped by the tail so it died in the fight. Trevor and I somehow managed to get it onto my kayak and started to paddle in. It was a long paddle to shore and the waved were still pretty bad. I was talking to some guy waiting for a good break in the waves when I started to paddle in. I thought I could make it in but I caught a small wave. With the added waight the nose of my kayak went into the wave and I flipped over. I lost 2 fishing rods but managed to brind in the shark.
Thats my adventure with Trevor catching my first Thresher Shark. Till next times. Jose R Lopez
