Candle Magick
This is the most simple and effective type of spell making ritual that I have utilized. Inexperienced and experienced practioners alike can easily perform this type of ritual. It is fairly inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing!
First, you must be very clear about what you want and expect from your ritual. After you are certain of the will of your heart, then you may proceed. Choose a candle of an appropriate color by refering to the Spell Book Color Chart.
Carve into the candle one or more keywords specifiying your intentions. To do this you may use your athame or other appropriate sharp object. For instance, if you want to spell craft for a business you may want to use a letter opener or paper clip from your business; or, for a love spell you may want to use the point of a heart shaped charm. Its considering the small things that brings success to endeavors!
Next you must consecrate your candle. This can be done one of several ways. The most common way is to rub the entire surface of the candle, excluding the wick, with an appropriate ritual or essential oil. Choose an appropriate oil from the Color Chart. While glazing the entire surface of the candle, be sure to keep your mind clearly focused on your intention. A similar approach is to focus your intention into the candle as you let it sit within the smoke of burning incense.
A final alternative is to simply sit with the candle and will your intentions into it. Anyway you do it, the consecration of the candle is very important.
Finally, when you've determined the time is correct, you may light it. For some spell making you may want the candle to burn continuously until it burns itself out. However, I feel the spell making is often more potent if you burn the candle and focus on your intention for some time every day or night, so that it lasts for a specific amount of time. You may need to study some of my charts to determine appropriate time periods.
*NOTE: It is an ancient belief that blowing the flame of a candle out weakens the spirit of the candle, and brings the user bad luck. Many people believe that lit candles need to be extinguished with
the use of a damper, or at least with wet fingertips. Keeping in mind that most Wiccan practioners have historically been from within the "lower" economic classes, it is always highly encouraged and acceptable to find free and handy substitutes to tools many practioners buy in occult shops. For instance, instead of a damper you may choose a shot glass or bottle cap to dampen your candle's flame.
*SAFETY TIP: NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED. EVER!
