Paper Kisses

A war rages
on a field of battle,
a fallen soldier.

An envelope in his pocket
next to his heart,
a letter of love.

Talking of future plans
of a love between two,
of a home and children

One lock of hair from his son
red lipstick stained lips
imprinted on three pieces of paper.

One for each year
they had together
and the love they share.

carefully placed in this envelope
with love
and sealed with a kiss.
Soldiers

Burning memories
of eternal thoughts.
Remembering
unsung lives.
Long-suffering
ages.
Cold ignited
battles.
Sins burning
in smoke-filled minds.
Wondering souls,
heavens heroes.
A Sailor's Wife

As I watched you walk away
to board your ship.
A tear fell from my eye
as a piece of my heart breaks.
For I know you may never return,
to little Joey and I.
I shall smile and wave
as your ship sails away.
For a distant shore and a war,
I wish didn't have to be.
But while you are away,
I will pray each day for your safe return
and cry at night in the fear you may not.
I'm living a life of wonder and worry,
waiting for an unwanted knock on my door.
I will be strong for little Joey
and assure him of your safe return
and the day my heart will once again be whole.
