Dearest Lance, Congratulations on the promotion to Commander, the news has even reached Sven on Pollux, we are all so proud of you. You have worked so hard and deserve it. How are you and the other boys doing? Everyday on Arus is just like the day before; it has become more and more dull. Without you boys here there is no excitement, just meeting after meeting and paperwork that reaches the sky. I can tell that I am not the only one who misses you all, even Nanny seems grumpier without anyone to chide for breaking the rules or being the �ruffians� that you are. Oh look at me going on and on about my life, what are you guys doing now? Coran notified this morning me about the Officer and Diplomat�s ball that is in a month from now. As soon as he finished telling me about it I told him to clear my calendar for the week before and after, any chance that I would get to see you boys again is well worth the change in schedule. Nanny thinks it will be a �Wonderful opportunity to meet new princes.� I on the other hand look forward to the ball to see old friends. Her royal highness, Princess Allura: Thanks for the warm thoughts as far as the promotions go, but I was not the only one. Hunk was upped to Lieutenant Commander and is a chief mechanic for one of the fleets. Pidge was made an official member of Garrison at the rank of Lieutenant and works in the research and development division of Garrison. Sven wrote and told me that he was made Ambassador to Pollux with the rank of Commander. Well Keith teaches Military tactics and self-defense at the Academy, oh and he was made Captain. Well I�m actually back at the Academy also training the new pilots. I�m not sure though that �ruffians� still applies; I mean we are heroes and all. I�m glad that we�ll be able to see you again, and don�t worry I�ll keep your secret safe, and we will all be at the ball�dress uniform and all. I�m sure you�ll have to fight all the women off with a stick once they see me, but I�ll save a dance for you�I mean you are the Princess of Arus. ** The week of the ball had arrived and so had hundreds of diplomats and higher and mid ranking officers. The Garrison Academy had given their students a week off so that the instructors, who were also officers, could prepare for the gala. **
Keith had been watching the shuttle passenger records for days in hopes of seeing a listing for either Arus or Pollux, neither of them appeared.
�Looking for someone in particular?� Lance said sneaking up behind Keith.
�No� Keith snapped. �I was just wondering how much we are going to have to up security. The lists keep growing.�
�Are we expecting an attack? No, Zarkon and Lotor are gone, it is time to relax and have some fun Keith.�
�Zarkon is in prison and Lotor and Hagar�s whereabouts are unknown remember, I am not taking any chances.�
�Whatever� Lance brushed off Keith�s frustration. �Hey I�ve heard about this one diplomat I hear she�s a real babe why don�t you take escort her to the ball?�
�I think that I should concentrate on the issue of security that was set before me.� Keith tried to hide his real feelings on the subject.
�Yeah right, I think you�d just feel guilty if you took another girl out.� Keith stood there completely shocked. �I�m right aren�t I, could it be that our fearless Captain has fallen in love?�
�Shut up Lance!� Keith warned.
�I can�t believe it Commander Keith has fallen in love.� Lance fell backwards melodramatically not hearing Keith�s warning until Keith shoved Lance against a nearby wall.
�I said shut up McClain.� Keith warned again pulling him into the classroom. Keith walked to the other side of the room to stare out the window, well it was either that or he put a hole in the wall. �Look Lance, this is really complicated, and if I were to find out that anyone found out about this then you and I will have some serious problems.�
�Yeah�right,� Lance rolled his eyes.
�Yes I do love Princess Allura but that�s just it, she�s the Princess of Arus, I�m just a pilot and a teacher for the Galaxy Alliance. Besides she probably doesn�t even feel the same way.�
Lance was growing very angry as he listened to Keith degrade himself. �Ok first of all what about Romelle and Sven? She�s a princess and he�s a pilot, second who says that she doesn�t feel the same way?� Lance stopped when he saw the look on Keith�s face.
�Speaking of Romelle and Sven, I wonder why they aren�t attending the ball?�
�Who says they aren�t? Sven wrote me and told me that they were attending the ball but they had a couple of stops to make before they arrived.�
�I see.� Keith simply stated �I wish that one stop that they�d make would be to Arus and bring Allura with them. The day of the Summit Meeting, I remember that day just shortly before Doom fell.
�Is being a part of Voltron all that important?' I asked.
�Only the most important thing in the universe to me. Do you want me?�

Princess Allura, of Arus: Everything goes according to plan; sometimes I think that Keith is so trusting. We were talking earlier and the subject of the ball came up and how he didn�t see any arrivals from either Arus or Pollux. No I didn�t tell him that you were coming, however I did mention that Sven said that he has a couple of stops to make. When I even suggested that he escort a young female diplomat he got real angry saying how he had to attend to security details. This is going to be beautiful, I can�t wait to see the look on Keith�s face when he realizes exactly who I�m asking him to escort to the ball. I�ll see you the day after next. ** Two days later **
�Captain Kogane, Commander McClain, Lieutenant Commander Garret, Lieutenant Stoker to landing bay 1 substation 19, Captain Kogane, Commander McClain, Lieutenant Commander Garret, Lieutenant Stoker to landing bay 1 substation19,� a monotone voice came over the announcement system.
Once at the landing pad Pidge asked, �I wonder why they need all four of us to meet a shuttle?�
�Easy little buddy they need all four of us to carry the bags for whoever this is.�
�I didn�t sign up for this to be a pack-mule.� Lance protested and turned around to leave but a hand on his back when the pressure latches on the hatch released. Lance knew that the shuttle originally came from Pollux by way of Arus and Ebb.
Once the door opened a young woman wearing a low cut tight black jumpsuit exited the shuttle. Keith thought he knew the blue eyes that peered from beneath the raven black hair; only one pair had ever set him ablaze strait through to his heart. But they were a slightly deeper shade of blue with gold flames that shot through them. This young woman gave Keith a feeling he couldn�t shake. She nodded slightly to the other passengers who then quickly exited the shuttle to join her.
�Sven!� Three of the waiting Voltron Force members cheered each one then greeted Romelle. Keith absentmindedly stood there he just couldn�t take his eyes off the young woman now standing behind Romelle.
�Its good to see you guys,� Sven smiled knowing the answer to his next question. �Keith, are you alright?�
�Yeah Sven its good to see you, Princess Romelle I hope you had a good trip.� Keith said inattentively never taking his eyes never leaving taking his eyes off the young woman.
�Yes Keith it was a good flight, Allura sends her love� Keith�s cheeks immediately flared up to a bright shade of red, �and I would like to introduce Alexis she lives not too far from the palace on Pollux and trains new guards, she studied under the best Garrison officer.�
�She and I also work closely for security and she is one hell of a diplomat.� Sven added watching how taken aback Keith was, obviously impressed with her resume. Slowly he approached extending his hand.
�Its nice to meet you Alexis, I am Captain Keith, this is Commander Lance McClain, Lieutenant Commander Hunk Garret, and Lieutenant Pidge Stoker.� Keith finally woke up from his trance, Alexis only looked to Sven and Romelle who chuckled.
�Keith, Alexis does not speak,� Sven leaned against the wall informed the group expanding the story covering for Alexis� true identity.
�Alright then, shall we show you to your rooms. I�m sure that you are all tired.� Keith asked bowing deeply not to Romelle but to Alexis
�That would be lovely Captain,� Romelle said taking Sven�s arm suppressing another giggle.
�Lance would you, Hunk, and Pidge mind gathering the bags?� Keith asked once again transfixed by the young woman.
�Since when are we volunteer bell boys?� Hunk growled but was ignored by the person that was directed to. �OUCH! Wha�d ya do that for?� he yelled, after being jabbed by a rather sharp elbow. Lance dashed to the door to make sure that they were out of Keith's range of hearing.
�Shut up Hunk, don�t you see it?� Lance shouted.
�See what?� Hunk asked.
�I can�t believe it!� Pidge exclaimed.
�Believe WHAT!� Hunk bellowed growing frustrated.
�SHHH!� both Lance and Pidge ambushed Hunk trying to get him to silence down.
�WHAT?� Hunk whispered. Lance looked down the hall to make sure that they are alone
�Hunk, don�t you recognize that look on Keith�s face?� Lance interrogated.
�Nope,� Hunk stretched. Lance growled in frustration.
�That look Hunk, is the same look that Keith had when he first saw Allura, that look Hunk is the same look that Keith had when he first realized that he is in love with Allura.�
�Oh�OH!� Hunk stood there with a grin on his face and his arms behind his head, he finally understood everything.
Sven, Romelle, Alexis, and Keith continued down the hall winding around corridors until they reached the residential section of the base. This section of the compound did not have the cold and unwelcome feeling that the rest of the compound had, it was almost like walking into a fine hotel from the early twentieth century. Thankfully Keith had been through these corridors many times and knew the paths by heart since he never took his eyes off Alexis. Shortly they arrived at Romelle and Alexis� room. �Well here we are,� Keith smiled and nervously ran his hair through. �Yes we are� Romelle smiled pushing her way between Keith and Alexis, pulling her into the room and closing the door. �Keith I think it is time that we went and helped the others with the bags.� �Yeah I guess we should.� �Don�t bother Romeo,� Lance called down the hall. �Sorry guys, I guess I was a little caught up in something.� Keith apologized. �What ever, if you weren�t such a stick in the mud when it comes to Allura then you would realize the world goes on around you.� Lance lectured setting down the bags. �Come on Lance you�re being too hard on him,� Pidge protested. �No Pidge I�m not,� Lance argued while Sven opened the door, pulling Keith inside. �Keith may I speak with you?� �Sure Sven, what�s on your mind?� �Princess Allura� Sven simply stated. �What about her?� Keith�s voice iced over. �Come on Keith I know you love her.� �Look Sven I know you mean well but you have to understand she is a Princess of one of the more influential planets of the Alliance, where as I am only a pilot. Because of that I can never allow myself to think of the fact that I am in love with Princess Allura.� �First of all Keith that argument might work with others however it does not work with me. Romelle is a princess and I am only a pilot, remember? Secondly, what if I told you that her highness has plans for a couple of days after the ball for touring some of the local schools?� �Ally�s coming! MY Ally is coming to Earth! I wonder if I�no she won�t, she can�t, why bother.� Keith thought while Sven took quite an interest in the spectrum of looks that Keith was expressing at the news of Allura�s arrival. �I hope she enjoys her stay while she is here. Now if you�ll excuse me I think it is time for everyone to retire. I�m sure that we all have quite a bit to do tomorrow.� Keith said coldly noting the time. �I�m sure that you do Captain.� Sven smiled.
**The next few days were filled with fulfilling the final details for the ball everyone was scurrying around getting everything. Sven and Romelle took Alexis to get a new gown for the ball. Finally the night of the ball arrived and every officer was in their dress uniform** Many of the officers and their wives were already in the grand ballroom, which for four particular officers reminded them of more turbulent times. A war that passed only a year before changed the destinies of hundreds of people. Keith, Lance, Sven, Hunk, and Pidge all found new places to call home. Earth would always be their home planet, but Arus became their home during the war, even though they are now stationed back on Earth. The single men and single women were gathered along the opposing east and west walls of the room, while the couples mingled among the center. The dozen princes were fawning over the small handful of princesses that attended. Many of the women, both married and single, were trying to catch the attention of the group of men known as the legendary Voltron Force of planet Arus. �Good evening gentlemen� a newly decorated Admiral Walker greeted, �it is good to see everyone gathered under more passive times.� �Yes sir it is� Keith spoke up. �Lieutenant it is good for you to join us.� �Yes sir� Pidge saluted. �Its nice to be able to teach a new generation of techs.� �Lieutenant-Commander, How are you finding the equipment down in the repair shop, I hope they are not to antiquated for what you are used to.� �No sir, everything is great.� Hunk replied. �Commander, how are our young pilots doing.� �They make me wish I was back in their seats.� Lance jested. �Captain� the new admiral greeted again taking him slightly to the side, �it surprises me that there was no ambassador from Arus listed on the docket.� �Yes sir, however I am most certain that her highness has many facets of restoring the townships and other institutions that have been temporarily retired since the beginning of the war.� �Yes Captain this is what I would like to talk with you about. We have been considering sending a team to planet Arus to assist in the rebuilding of said institutions and I would like you to choose those to go. I would like for you to stop by my office tomorrow morning to discuss the rebuilding of said institutions, around 9 am.� �Yes sir.� Keith saluted. �Good I will see you tomorrow morning.� �What was that all about?� Lance and the others joined back up with Keith and Lance handed him a drink. �Oh he wants me to meet up with him about sending a team back to Arus� Keith said nonchalantly just before taking a sip of his drink. �What? You have got to be kidding me.� �I don�t want to recommend someone without talking to the group that I would be sending. If I can I would like to recommend the original team sent by Garrison to Arus.� Keith saw the look on Lance�s face. �Well I have heard the rumors about Commander McClain�s flight class and how it is the first one that fills up when it comes to scheduling. I just didn�t want to take you from your students without talking to you first. The same goes for you both also� Keith referred to Hunk and Pidge. �I was actually starting to miss those old kitties.� Hunk threw in. �I feel the same about the computer in the castle,� Pidge added and Keith then turned to Lance to get his opinion. �Do you really want me to say that I want to go back home?� Lance yelled just above a whisper. �What time do you meet for the meeting? �9 AM� �Then at 9 AM you can present your recommendations that will be sent to Arus.� �How about we worry about that tomorrow morning and just enjoy this evening.� Just then a young lieutenant started announcing the diplomats that had just arrived at the ballroom. �Princess Romelle of Pollux and Ambassador Sven Holgersson.� The young man called out. �Hey Sven and Romelle just got here,� Pidge called out. �Yeah, let�s go say hi little buddy.� �Hey Keith I don�t see anyone with Sven and Romelle� Lance jabbed at Keith. �Shut up Lance.� Keith shot back. �Oh come now Captain shall we go greet Princess Romelle.� Lance mocked heading off to talk to Sven and Romelle while Keith followed just behind. �Hey Sven, Princess Romelle it is good to see you this evening,� Lance took and kissed the back of Romelle�s hand. Once Lance knew that Keith was standing right behind him he asked, �Romelle I couldn�t help but notice that someone is missing this evening.� �She told me that she would be here, she had a little thing to take care of then she would be here.� �I�m sure that she�ll save a dance for you Keith,� Lance prodded Keith again. �Here she is,� Romelle noted. �Ladies and Gentlemen may I have your attention.� The young lieutenant announced as the orchestra ceased to play �May I present a young Princess who this victory would not be possible without her planet�s support in defeating the Empire of Doom� The ballroom thundered from the roar of the crowd. �Ladies and gentlemen with out further a due may I present the daughter of King Alfor, Princess Allura Del Leone.� Once again the ballroom roared to life with cheers from everyone but one. Captain Keith Kogane was to stunned to move.
�Thank you everyone for the warm welcome, but we are here to celebrate the anniversary of a victory over the Doom Empire. Please go back to enjoying yourselves.� Allura greeted. She then made her way through the onslaught of various princes, politicians, diplomats, and officers to the back of the ballroom looking for a familiar face, to her luck she found five of them. �Hunk, Pidge, Sven, Romelle; its good to see you all again.� She hugged her friends that she longed to see again. �Lance I�ve gotten all your letters, thank you for keeping me still apart of everything here on Earth.� �No problem Princess I mean what�s a guy to do, leave the most popular Princess in the galaxy uninformed? Nah, this is much more productive.� Lance leaned in to kiss Allura on the cheek. �Why thank you sir, but if you�ll excuse me there is a Captain that I need to speak with.� �I�d check by the bar.� Lance thumbed over his shoulder. �Thank you Lance.� Allura ran off to find Keith. �You know Captain if you keep drinking all those there won�t be enough for anyone else.� �Why didn�t you tell me you were coming?� Keith tried to be angry. �Keith I would have thought that you of all people would have understood that with Lotor�s presence unknown my presence at public events has to be limited.� �The thing is Ally I do understand, I�ve�I�ve just missed you.� �I�ve missed you also Keith, in fact that is part of the reason that I�m here. You know the presentation that is to take place tonight that there were no details given to you about�� �Yes, what about it.� �Well I knew that if you knew about this you wouldn�t have shown up here tonight,� Allura said lifting one of five small boxes from her bag, handing it to Keith. �I�m considering asking for the Voltron Force to be reassigned to Arus, I can think of no one better to help guide a new generation of Arusians then the men who helped make sure that they had a future to come to,� Allura stated while shocked at Keith�s response, he chuckled. �Another one please,� Keith asked the bartender. �Black lion?� the young man asked, Keith nodded in response. �What is so funny?� Allura asked. �Just a little bit ago I was approached by Admiral Walker, who asked me to recommend a team to go to Arus to help in the rebuilding of Arus.� Keith chuckled. �What�s in here?� �I think you should open it before the presentation.� Keith slowly opened the box. �Allura, this is beautiful.� �Coran and I were talking several months ago about traditions that we used to have. We eventually began talking about the Lion Knights and I asked him if we could bring several of the traditions back to life.� Allura paused. �Here you go,� the bartender brought Keith�s drink to him, �Is there anything that I can get for you tonight your Highness?� �Just a glass of Club Soda with a double shot of Cherry syrup, thank you.� Allura turned back to Keith, �Have you chosen whom you are going to recommend to Admiral Walker?� �I have,� Keith avoided. �Well who are they?� Allura prodded. �Meet me at the Admiral�s office at 9 tomorrow morning and you will find out.� �Actually I don�t think I can Keith. I have an appointment with him at 8:30.� �How come you two aren�t out here having fun?� Lance ran up between the two. �Allura and I were just discussing our plans for tomorrow morning.� �That is fine you may discuss business tomorrow morning tonight is for fun.� �You are right Lance, Princess Allura would you like to dance,� Keith asked. �I would love to Captain. Lance would you mind watching my bag?� �Not at all your Highness. Now you two children get out on to that floor and have fun.� Keith handed the box back to Allura who slid it back into the bag before heading onto the dance floor with Keith, the orchestra just began to play an old earth waltz by Johann Strauss 'The Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz'. Once on the dance floor Keith took Allura into his arms and started to sway until they were moving within the music. Couple by couple took notice of the pair on the floor and decided to give them their space by exiting the floor. �Keith there is one thing that I have missed since you guys left. Its like a cloud has been hovering all of Arus, even Nanny hasn�t been as cheerful as she used to be and Coran has been all business.� �Allura, may I ask you something?� �Sure Keith.� �Allura the war had given me something to think about, my parents died so young before they really got the chance to raise a family, I was just thinking that one day I would like to start a family� �Oh Keith, that is a beautiful thought.� �This re-assignment to Arus might put that thought into action.� �I hope you find someone special to start a family with,� Allura added, neither of them realized that the music had stopped until Admiral Walker took the stage. �Ladies and Gentlemen may I have your attention for a brief moment.� Admiral walker interrupted the remaining couples. �Dinner will be served just shortly followed by a special presentation. So if you all wouldn�t mind taking your seats.� Everyone made their way to their seats. �Hey guys do you know what this presentation is about?� Hunk asked. �Nope,� �I have no idea, Oh Allura here�s your bag,� �Thank you Lance.� �Allura would you like an escort to Admiral Walker�s office tomorrow morning?� Keith smiled �Yes Keith that would be wonderful.� �Why is it that I have a bad feeling that I am missing something,� Lance interrupted. �That's easy Lance, it appears that our dearest Princess Allura has an appointment at 8:30 tomorrow morning, in which she is going to petition him to send the original Voltron Force to Planet Arus to help with the rebuilding of the planet.� Keith informed. �Coran has been in touch with Admiral Walker over the past several months requesting that he send a team to help with the rebuilding,� Allura added. �So I believe that the team should be made up of a group of people that Arus trusts.� �So I guess tonight I should start packing.� Lance cheered. �Not just yet Lance, I still have to meet with Admiral Walker, he might not approve.� �He has to approve,� Pidge protested. �The people barely trusted us when we first arrived, there is no one better for the job.� �I agree Pidge, that is why while in my meeting with Admiral Walker I also am going to petition him to send the Voltron force back to Arus.� Admiral Walker took the stage again. �Ladies and gentlemen I have been informed that dinner is served.� Suddenly the kitchen doors opened and about a hundred servers dressed all in white brought the first course of the dinner a simple salad with a ginger dressing followed shortly by the main course. It was brought out covered by silver domes and stood to the left of each of the diplomats and officers. In two choreographed steps, the servers set the plates down and lifted the domes revealing the dinner for the evening. It was Chicken Parmesan on a bed of angel hair pasta and a roll. �Wow Hunk you really out did yourself.� Lance complimented. �Well I just thought of our favorite foods: Keith likes chicken, Lance likes pasta, Pidge likes bread, Sven likes veggies, and well my favorite is yet to come.� �I�m just proud of my interplanetary diplomacy students,� Keith threw in. �I gave them the option to do a little project which you see here. They are playing the part of the servers, but they are to observe the interaction between the different planets and to write a paper on what they observed. I am very interested to see what they have to say.� �How did you get everyone to stay, this like our semester break back at the Academy?� �That was the easy part, I just told them that they had the choice of either writing the paper or taking the final.� �That was evil, even I have heard how brutal your final exam is, I wouldn�t even want to take it,� Pidge added. Nearly forty-five minutes since the main course was served the servers stood by the tables again to clear the plates before bringing out the dessert. Each person at the ball was given a serving of cheesecake and had their choice of several fresh fruit toppings. Once everyone had finished his or her meal Admiral Walker took the stage once again. �Ladies and gentlemen, as I know many of you are wondering about the presentation that was mentioned in the calendar of tonight�s events, without further delay may I present her royal highness, Princess Allura del Leone. Since many of the servers were students of the Voltron Force they were allowed in to the ballroom for the presentation. But no one saw that one of the students had smuggled something in with him. �Thank you Admiral Walker for this wonderful welcome. As the Admiral has mentioned I do have a special presentation to make but when I first arrived this evening it was said that without Arus� support this victory would not be possible. I disagree without the support of all the planets involved this victory would not be possible. I would like to express my gratitude to every person and planet that stood up against the forces of doom. But there are a group of men who deserve a special moment of recognition.� Allura paused while over at the main table Lance, Pidge, and Hunk looked at Keith. �Keith she doesn�t mean what I think she means,� Lance whispered to Keith. �I don�t know Lance, just listen to what she has to say.� Keith lied to his former second in command. �This group of five men put their lives in jeopardy every time evil showed its face. It is now that I ask that Lieutenant Darrell Stoker, Lieutenant-Commander Tsuyoshi Garret, Commander Sven Holgersson, Commander Lance McClain, and Captain Keith Kogane to join me here on the stage.� The Voltron Force stood just below the young princess facing her. Allura paused, �May I present to you all for the first time in a long time the Voltron Force.� The ballroom roared to life again with a standing ovation that lasted for nearly fifteen unwavering minutes. The small group turned to face the audience that was cheering them on. �Man I�ve never greeted like that before�I think I like it.� Lance whispered to Keith who was standing to his right. �I just hope this doesn�t turn out to be like some of the events at the Castle of Lions.� �I don�t think it will be Lance, I think this will be more diplomatic then formal, besides I think the most of the steps in the Arusian events were no more than choreography, possibly Nanny�s. Once the ballroom became quiet again the team turned back around and Princess Allura spoke up again. �Lieutenant Darrell Stoker you have lost so much but you have grown strong from all your struggles. Lieutenant you were and always will be the pilot of Green Lion and as such I award you with the Arusian Medal of Honor. Lieutenant-Commander Tsuyoshi Garret you have discovered much fighting for people you don�t even know, new technologies and people that were alien are now familiar to you. Lieutenant Commander you were and always will be the pilot of Yellow Lion and as such I award you with the Arusian Medal of Honor. Commander Sven Holgersson your world has been turned upside down but you fought to turn your world right side up and now you have reached new heights. Commander you were the original pilot of Blue Lion and as such I award you with the Arusian Medal of Honor. Commander Lance McClain, you have taught youths to reach the sky. Finally Captain Keith Kogane you have risked your life on numerous occasions without thought of peril to yourself to save mine. My planet and I owe my life and more to these young men, and as I honor you with these small awards I wish to thank you each for everything you have given to a people who you did not even know. Captain you were and always will be the pilot of Black Lion and as such I award you with the Arusian Medal of Honor and for your repeated devotion to the Royal House of Arus, I award you with the Arusian Blue Rose. This medal is only awarded to those who have shown unwavering loyalty to a member of the Royal House of Arus.� Princess Allura smiled as she pinned the medals on each of the uniforms of the young men before her. �Princess Allura, I believe I speak for the others when I say that it has been an honor to serve with and defend you and your planet.� Keith saluted followed by Lance, Sven, Hunk and Pidge. But while Keith was speaking no one noticed a young man that stood up in the back of the room. He raised a blaster in his right hand and slowly pulled the trigger. Keith watched in horror while Allura fell backwards she had been shot in the chest.
