Poem I Wrote For Keiko

To the spirit of Keiko; swim wild and free
dive deep in the ocean and play in the kelp,
the cold water's your home and your keeper.

You once were a captive; you longed for the sea,
endless circles you swam day after day,
the great fin on your back became droopy and sad.

That tank was a home as well as a cage,
behaviors were learned and you did them for fish,
the pride of the hunter drained away

Outside Keiko was sweet, but inside part was sadness,
surviving off memories only orcas recall,
knowing one day freedom you'd taste.

To the spirit of Keiko; life now took a new twist,
that star of a movie...cherished by all,
well-known by all children as "willy the whale"

Children heard of your story and how freedom you missed,
they wanted to help you and save you from death,
a foundation was born and the ransom was paid

Anew home was built in Oregon State,
trucks came, picked you up, and the journey began,
mankind cheered their best wishes to Keiko

The world watched in awe and decided your fate,
the tricks were deprogramed and faded away,
you were now taught to be wild once more

To the spirit of Keiko; who made Iceland home,
who played and who was now truely happy,
be free gentle Keiko, live long and live well

In the deep ocean blue you are now free to roam,
play with the orcas and hunt for live fish,
you are free at last, no more tricks; no more crowds

Though humans abused you, their company you sought,
small children pet you and rode on your back,
their pressence you seemed to enjoy

People loved you and fed you with fish they had bought,
soon contact was banned and you moved on,
Keiko, the orca, most famous of all

To the spirit of Keiko; you will be missed the most,
your death was untimely and in age you were young,
watch over us, orca, from the ocean above

Your successes in life, to that we shall toast,
all living beings shall mourn your demise,
we love you sweet Keiko, Godspeed and goodbye
