Chapter 5

Umaya and Kyle trained and hid in the house for three weeks. In that time, Umaya taught Kyle how to sense other creatures’ ki levels, how to use a sword, and various ki attacks. In turn, Kyle taught Umaya what the weapons on the walls were and how to use them, energy attacks that Umaya didn’t know, and how to throw a knife at a target and hit it with deadly accuracy.

One evening, Kyle and Umaya had just finished their training for the day when Kyle asked Umaya, “Have you ever seen a full moon?”

Umaya was a bit surprised at this question for she had never really thought about it before. “I don’t guess I have. I remember seeing the moon in different stages but never full. Have you?”

Kyle looked a little disappointed at Umaya’s reply, and then he replied to Umaya’s question, “No. No one in the city was allowed to go outside during a full moon. It only happened once, eight years ago today. Would you mind staying up late to see the full moo? I would love to see it!”

Umaya’s eyes lit up as she heard that there was going to be a full moon that night. “I would love to!” Umaya nearly yelled. Then she looked a bit confused. “Why wouldn’t they let you see a full moon? Would something bad happen to the city? Of course the city always has had strict rules,” Umaya said. Kyle nodded.

“I don’t know why the law was mad. What would be so dangerous about seeing a full moon? When I have asked any adult, they try to change the subject. I wonder if everyone on this planet is so screwed up as everyone in the city,” Kyle said.

“Want to find out?” Umaya suggested.

“Sure, but not tonight of curse. How ‘bout in a few days? Whatever landed here is on the other side of the planet, I think. It should be safe for us to go into another city if we can find one somewhere near here,” Kyle said.

“Sensing power levels sure is helpful huh, Kyle?” Umaya asked Kyle.

“Yeah! I don’t get why I couldn’t do it before. Hey, how did you learn to do it?” Kyle asked.

Umaya looked out the window to her left and looked aver the trees since they were on the third floor of the mansion and at the setting sun. “I don’t know exactly how I learned to. I don’t quite remember which, but I either could do it since I was born or something inside of me one day just snapped and it was all to o easy. It’s just all very strange. I’ve been able to use my ki since I was very young; I think since I was two. My father never taught me until I asked him to train me. Even then, I was always teaching my father new things. Once he learned how to sense power levels, he would sometimes be afraid of me. When that happened, I became afraid of my own power.” As Umaya talked, her eyes began to well up with tears as the memories of her and her father resurfaced. Soon, tears poured down her cheeks and fell onto the floor. She was still staring at where the sun used to be, for the sun had gone down as she spoke. Her mind filled with memories of her father and more tears fell down her face. Umaya then wiped the tears from her eyes and face and then turned to Kyle. She said, “The sun has gone down and the full moon will be visible shortly. We better start to go outside and find a place in the woods that is clear enough to see the moon."

Umaya then walked out the door. Kyle soon followed her. Umaya slowly walked down the stairs leaving a trail of tears down the steps. Kyle watched her, memorizing every expression on her face and every step that she took.

He could not understand her reactions to the memories she had of her father, for he never had a father or family who loved him. His father and mother never once cared about where he was, what he was doing, or even if he didn’t come home for a week at a time. His parents never noticed when he took some or even a lot of money from them. He had to buy everything he wanted or needed on his own. He had a job, but it was terrible and didn’t pay very much. He hated his parents and as far as he could tell, they hated him, too. He would never understand Umaya’s love for her father until much later. What he did understand at the time, though, was that he had a feeling deep down in his heart for Umaya that he dared not show her at the time.

He soon followed Umaya down the stairs but only when she was already on the second floor and was continuing down to the first. Kyle sat on the rail of the steps and slid down easily. He had caught up with Umaya and had past her in a matter of seconds. When they both arrived on the first floor, each of the two grabbed a wrist-light and continued out the front door that they had rebuilt since Umaya had blasted it away they day that they had arrived.
