Apocalypses & other Dinosaurs
are supposed to be extinct,
only vestigial bones & notions
of a descending end,
a cataclysmic schism in time.
'Ontology recapitulates ontogeny',
reptile crossfires in primate brains,
only glossed with linear vanities,
gilded with self-exalted sanctities...
the Ethos of Fear
finds rectitude in defeat
and so imagines final salvation
in final annihilation.
A way of thinking so abstruse
that it would lead us there.

The Hopis and Tibetans have a real handle
on the immediatist hand of humankind
in the course of our only planet,
the cyclical continuum of time
spiraling up or down on our choices and deeds,
our only world brighter or darker by our effects,
or more & more the same.
Truer prophets see no end on earth,
but centuries of junctures, eons of openings
to our evolving understanding
and our ability to choose and act...
no higher goal than manifestation,
or vow so daring as freedom.
A way of thinking so attuned
that we fear and turn away.
