Jimmy's Song  ...  James Joseph Dinneen

On a cold December day In the year of seventy-one,
A little boy was born then, a new life had just begun.
Not small by any measure, but a strapping baby boy;
He brought love and lots of laughter, and filled his parents' hearts with joy.

He was just a babe in arms when tragedy struck his home;
He lost his doting Mother when Jesus called her home.
Our family quickly rallied to this little child's side,
And tried to make life normal for the loss of his Mother's guide.

He thrived through all the handling that our family did impart,
And grew with all the mothering leaving footprints on our hearts.
This little boy was blessed by a second chance it seems;
His Dad found another Mother It was if it was a dream.

We embraced this family unit, It seemed they had it all;
And the little boy grew stronger; 'truly blessed' was our call.
The years they passed so quickly And the little boy got wed,
Had a family of his own now; a wife, two kids~ seemed everything was said.

Once again when we weren't looking, disaster struck again;
This little boy was stricken and disease would wear him thin.
Again our family rallied and prayed for a swift cure;
Months past with no solution,we were losing him for sure.

This little boy never faltered In his zest and love for life;
He was always optimistic; though his heart was full of strife.
He fought a long hard battle and the disease took it's mighty hold;
We watched and prayed to heaven, his story must be told.

On a cold and windy morning, with his family by his side,
The little boy, he left us, but in our hearts he will abide.
The legacy he left us is the passion that he had;
To live each day to the fullest, and for this we can't be sad.

We have God's daily blessings, and his constant reassurance,
that we will be rewarded for our love, strength and endurance.
The little boy had all of these and we can smile with pride;
For we know that he is home now; other loved ones at his side.

He played the hand life dealt him with passion and with love.
He taught us how to cherish ours, and we thank him up above.
Our faith gives us the knowledge that we will meet again one day,
But the interim will be painful because our little boy is not here today.

We all knew that Jimmy was an exceptional child, but we never would have guessed that he would turn out to be an exceptional young man.  I have tried to bring some reasoning to the fact that he was taken from our midst so young, but I am always reminded that "God picks his flowers carefully" and for reasons known only to Him.  I can only assume that by taking Jimmy home, it would stand as a lesson to us all that our time on this earth is but a short one. Jimmy showed us that in his short life span, he truly lived his life. He didn't just let it happen. He embraced the whole concept of living life to the fullest. He thirsted for each new day and for what it might bring... good or bad. He never feared that it might be his last day on this earth. For those of us who become self-absorbed in mundane treasures and material things, his life and his passing is a wake-up call to get our priorities straight. Shocking as it may seem, Jimmy's passing might be salvation for the rest of us. We can only pray that we are up to the task and not let Jimmy's life been in vain. We have been given a gift and we should accept it and move on. Jimmy will be our inspiration and for that, I thank him.
