The 2001 Section 4AA Championships were held on an unusually cold and windy day at Goodrich Golf Course. Gusts went up to 30 or 40 mph. The temperature was probably below 40 degrees at race time. Despite this, the race went on, unlike some sectional meets around the state.
PRs were at a rarity on this day. Only Troy Dey and Matt Mullerleile got new personal bests, finishing in 20:10 and 21:06, respectively in the JV race. The Varsity, despite no PRs, had a successful race. Grant Ellingson ran his 4th straight sub-18:00 race, and Brandon Heebink wasn't far behind in 18:11. Matt Sullivan, John Kennedy, and Matt Holton were all in the 18:20s. The team finished 7th, their best finish in three years. The Cardinals managed to beat out Elk River, a NWSC opponent who beat them at conference. The future looks bright for 2002. The Cardinals will be bringing back 9 Seniors, 6 Juniors, 8 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen. 4 of them ran on the Varsity squad at Sections.
