Coon Rapids entered the 2001 NWSC Championships in their best position to win it ever. Grant Ellingson ran a personal best 17:35 to finish 10th, earning All Conference honors, along with Brandon Heebink who was 13th in a time of 17:46. This was his second All Conference in a row. Matt Sullivan did his best to help the team, finishing 17th, earning All Conference Honorable Mention, in 18:00. John Kennedy missed out on Honorable Mention by one place and Matt Holton rounded out the top 5 finishers in 31st. In total, the Cardinals had 8 runners finish under 19:00 and 12 under 20:00, counting the JV runners.
The Cardinals finished 4th as a team with 96 points, losing to 3rd place Elk River by 10 points. Anoka won the meet, followed by Maple Grove in 2nd. Matt Toohey of Park Center won the individual championship. Kevin Voss of Anoka fell with less than 20 yards to go, coughing up the individual title and ending up 6th overall.
