The Cardinals opened their 2001 season in St. Cloud at the Apollo Invitational. On a very warm day on a dry course, Coon Rapids had slower times than had been previously expected. Some rookies had some great performances, however. Isaac Huss led the Junior Varsity team to a 4th place finish with a time of 20:18 in his first ever 5K. John Kennedy led the Junior High team to a 5th place finish with a time of 9:15 over the 2400 meter course, finishing 20th.

The Varsity team did not have the same success as their other teammates, however. The team finished 10th out of 11, beating only Elk River. Matt Sullivan finished with the best time of the day, running an 18:38, missing a personal best by 4 seconds. Brandon Heebink finished 2nd on the team in 19:27, followed by Matt Holton (19:33), Jake Heidkamp (19:40), and Nic Sabatke (20:11) to round out the top 5.
