On Wednesday evening at the Coon Rapids Dam, the Coon Rapids Cross Country team held a time trial to determine varsity spots for the Apollo Invitational. There weren't too many surprises in the top 7 finishers. All 7 of them were veterans to the team. Only one had not run a varsity race in 1999. The two seniors, Brian Krohmer and Ben Dubay, finished one-two with times of 11:00 and 11:06 for the 2 mile course. Not far behind was third place finisher Brandon Heebink with a time of 11:18. Grant Ellingson and Jake Heidkamp finished side by side for the fourth and fifth spots at 11:31. The final two spots were filled by juniors Matt Holton and Drew Reiter.
This team also has a lot of promise with their junior varsity this year. The 8th, 9th and 11th place finishers at the trials were all rookies this season. Matt Sullivan, an 8th grader was 8th, sophomore Blake Schwagel was 9th, and Mike Blilie was 11th. Photos from the time trial will be available following the Apollo Invitational.
