The tone was set very early in the 2000 St. Francis Invitational, Coon Rapids was going to do very well. In the junior high boys race, Matt Sullivan led from start to finish, winning by about 20 seconds over the 2500 meter course. 45 minutes later, the boys varsity race began, with Coon Rapids taking off to a fast start. When the dust finally settled, Coon Rapids had 11th, 13th and 15th place finishes from Brian Krohmer, Brandon Heebink, and Grant Ellingson, respectively. Brandon Heebink and Grant Ellingson both got personal best times with 18:09 and 18:11. Also getting a new best time was the 4th Cardinal to finish, Matt Holton who finished in 18:56. The varsity team finished third, trailing 2nd place Elk River by only 5 points.
In the final race of the day, the boys junior varsity, there many good Cardinal performances. Drew Ditlefsen finished 9th with a time of 19:57, and Jeff Erickson finished in 10th with a time of 20:00. Nearly every Coon Rapids junior varsity runner had a personal best time or seasonal best time. The junior varsity finished 2nd behind Centennial.
