In The Classroom
AVID students are required to take notes in all classes. Their notetaking progress is monitored on a weekly basis. Students must keep an organized binder, and learn to be responsible for all homework assignments. In the AVID classroom, students study vocabulary and practice skills associated with critical thinking. With the aid of classroom tutors students spend time in tutorial in order to keep up with the rigor of accelerated and scholars classes they are expected to attend.

AVID is fun!
There are projects on career paths that explore talents and interests. There  are lessons on applying for colleges, scholarships and financial aid.. There are field trips to discover our local universities. There are small team research projects and large group discussions. And practice, practice, practice for SATs, Senior Exit Projects, AP Exams, EOC's and college interviews.

How do you get into the program?
Students wanting to join the program must complete an application, which assesses their abilities, character, and classroom behavior.  The application requires a recommendation from 2 core teachers. Once a candidate submits an application and is found to meet the grading criteria, an  interview will be scheduled with Ms. Wellner. Students accepted into the program will receive a letter of acceptance.

AVID is an elective program that is designed for students with a desire to learn and the ability to achieve, whose ultimate goal is college. Students willing to start early on this path will get the extra support they need to be successful in both middle school and high school.
